2 THE CAL SIG George S. Eccles '22: A Legacy and Inspiration to Sigma Chi A lpha Beta Chapter has long-standing tradition of recruiting and cultivating men who go on to do great things in their lives. George S. Eccles '22 was one of those innovators who made a difference in the world and his legacy has continued decades after his passing in 1982. George was initiated into Sigma Chi at the University of California, Berkeley in 1919. He was a classmate of several other prominent UC Berkeley Sigma Chis, including Stanley Barnes '22, who served as Assistant U.S. Attorney General, a member of the College Football Hall of Fame, and was International President of the Sigma Chi Grand Counsel; E. Morris Cox '24, who was the founder of the Dodge and Cox Fund; and Harold "Brick" Muller '23, who was part of UC Berkeley's undefeated, untied 1920 football wonder team and member of the College Football Hall of Fame. George eventually transferred and graduated from Columbia University in New York, where he met fellow student Dolores "Lolie" Doré, whom he married in 1925. George and his brother, Marriner Stoddard Eccles, founded First Security Corporation in 1928. George served as CEO of First Security Corporation from 1945 to 1982. Under George's guidance, First Security Corporation grew to a successful multi-state bank holding company. When it merged with Wells Fargo in October 2000, it was the oldest multi-state bank holding company in the United States. As a civic leader, major community benefactor, and leading figure in the banking industry for more than half a century, George was not afraid to speak his mind. In doing so, he won the respect of those in the corporate and governmental worlds and the loyal admiration of his colleagues and friends. His innumerable honors and awards came not only from Utah, but also nationally and worldwide. Throughout their lives, George and Dolores were committed to supporting important community needs in Utah. To ensure that their philanthropic work would continue beyond their lifetimes, they established the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation in 1960. The foundation became active following the death of George in 1982, and since then it is the most visible and lasting legacy of the couple, carrying on their charitable vision by enriching educational, medical, cultural, and societal opportunities throughout Utah. In addition to his foundation legacy, George has two entertainment venues named in his honor. The George S. Eccles Dinosaur Park, located in Ogden, Utah, gives visitors the opportunity to see an exciting collection of creatures from prehistoric crawlers to predators and even flying reptiles. More than one hundred dinosaur sculptures fill the eight-acre park. These realistic, full-sized sculptures are based on actual fossil skeletons, and are brought to life by robotics, artistic details, and a state-of-the-art sound system. The park also has a working paleontology lab with hands-on exhibits. This fall, the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Theater in Salt Lake City, Utah, is scheduled to open. The state-of-the-art theater will feature the 2,500-seat Delta Performance Hall, an intimate black box theater, event and rehearsal spaces, a six-story grand lobby, an outdoor plaza, and a galleria. The theater's various spaces will host national touring Broadway, concerts, comedy, and other popular entertainment events, as well as innovative local performances and community events. Giving back to the community was a lifelong mission for George. His dedication to the people and culture of Utah will live for years to come through his foundation and entertainment venues. He was the true embodiment of what it means to be a Sigma Chi man. WELCOME, NEW MEMBERS Griffin Baum El Dorado Hills, Calif. Evan Blaney Santa Monica, Calif. Paco Covarrubias Palo Alto, Calif.
