WarriorsatGreenville GREENVILLE The Mercy Warriors (2-2 overall, 1-1 league), coming off a bye, take to the road Friday to face the Greenville Indians (2-3 overall, 1-1 league). It will be the Indians' first game back home since a week 2 drubbing of the Happy Camp Indians 76-6 on Sept. 2. Since then they lost to Weed 28-12, beat Loyalton 44-20 and lost to Princeton 42-26. Both teams played to narrow victories against the Hayfork Timberjacks, the Indians prevailing 30-28 on Aug. 26 and the Warriors winning 38-32 on Sept. 2. Mercy's top weapons on offence include Ka- vin McClellan, with 775 rushing yards and eight touchdowns and 74 pass- ing yards. Noe Rodriguez has 230 rushing yards and two touchdowns and soph- omore Tazman McClellan has 49 receiving yards. The Indians' quarter- back Carter Kingdon has 475 passing yards and five touchdowns with four in- terceptions and leads the team with 742 rush- ing yards with five touch- downs. The Indians spread the ball around on offense, with Christopher Gibson rushing for 604 yards and six TDs, Sheridan Kusel 587 yards and five TDs and Brent Washoe 355 yards and three TDs. Greenville has 186 points on the season, allowing 126. Mercy has 90 points on the season while allow- ing 172, mostly thanks to lopsided losses to Redding Christian (52-6) and Princ- eton (56-12). Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Greenville High School, 117 Grand Ave. in Greenville. Cardinals, Bye The league No. 1 Corning Cardinals (5-1 overall, 2-0 league) are on a bye this week. They are scheduled to return to action Oct. 14 in Red Bluff against the Spartans for the Tehama County Shootout. Football FROM PAGE 1 represents a formidable challenge. Not only are the Cubs due — they haven't won a World Series in 108 years — they also ma- rauded through the regu- lar season with a major- league best 103-58 record, their highest victory total since 1910. Chicago's dominant starting pitchers allowed only 6.91 hits per nine in- nings during the regu- lar season, the third low- est mark of all-time. And a homer-happy offense helped the Cubs outscore opponents by 252 runs. (The next best run-differ- ential was +184 by the Bos- ton Red Sox). But Giants can counter that impressive array of statistics with a single im- age. After Wednesday's vic- tory, former Giants third base coach Tim Flannery posted a photo of himself holding a sign that said: "GIANT COCKROACHES NEVER DIE." Players insist that this mental resolve separates them from the rest of the October pack. "We just really enjoy and have fun coming in and competing," Bumgar- ner said. "With the kind of clubhouse we have, I think that says it all. With- out that, we don't have the success that we do." Bumgarner is the biggest reason for the Giants' sus- tained October opulence. He has almost singlehand- edly (his left hand) kept the Giants afloat when a loss would end the season. Bumgarner has pitched 23 consecutive scoreless in- nings in winner-take-all games. And in his eight postseason games on the road, the Giants are 8-0. Jayson Stark of ESPN pointed out that Bumgar- ner has faced 24 hitters with runners in scoring po- sition in those road games. "And the next hit he allows will be his first," Stark wrote. "Yeah, really." But it's not just Bumgar- ner. The Giants made the playoffs only because their starting pitchers combined for a 1.84 ERA over their fi- nal six games as San Fran- cisco went 5-1 to squeak into the playoffs as the sec- ond wild-card team. Meanwhile, the Giants inconsistent offense found the afterburners, too, bat- ting .343 and scoring 6.3 per game over the final six games. Gillaspie's dramatic homer Wednesday not withstanding, the Giants generally find inventive ways to score, a talent that can come in handy this time of year. Only 28.5 per- cent of the Giants' runs this season came from homers (they hit 130). In contrast, the Mets got 51.1 percent of their runs via the long ball, according to Stats, LLC. That was second in the ma- jors to the Baltimore Ori- oles (51.9.) Those two homer-reli- ant teams are going, going, gone: The Mets and Orioles both lost in the wild-card round. The Giants? The cock- roaches are ready to invade Wrigley Field. "It's a great feeling to move on," Bochy said. "All you want is a shot. Just a shot. You never know with theseguys.Theyfindaway." Giants FROM PAGE 1 KATHY WILLENS — THE ASSOCIATED PRESS The San Francisco Giants are 34-14in postseason games under manager Bruce Bochy. completed 18 of 31 passes for 162 yards with one touchdown and the two in- terceptions, and he had 10 carries for 70 yards and a touchdown. The Cardinals (2-3) started Drew Stanton at quarterback in place of an injured Carson Palmer, and they scored 17 points off 49ers turnovers, including a 36-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter off Gab- bert's second intercepted pass of the night. Stanton was 11 of 28 for 124 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions for a Car- dinals team that punted nine times. Two earlier 49ers turn- overs, bookmarked a cou- ple minutes around half- time, quickly got converted into Cardinals touchdowns and a 14-7 deficit. The last-place 49ers next play Oct. 16 at Buffalo. Key Moments FOURTH-QUARTER PICK For the second time in five days, Gabbert had a fourth- quarter pass intercepted to snuff out a comeback at- tempt. Gabbert's first pass of the final quarter Thurs- day night got picked off by former 49ers draft pick Marcus Cooper, at the 49ers' 36-yard line. That led to a field goal and 24- 14 deficit. Earlier, the Car- dinals converted a second- quarter interception into a game-tying touchdown, and Gabbert nearly had a third pass intercepted but safety D.J. Swearinger dropped it near the Ari- zona goal line with 2:18 re- maining. HYDE SCORES Carlos Hyde's career-high sixth touchdown this season pulled the 49ers within 21-14 with 1:54 left in the third quarter. It capped an 11-play, 82-yard drive. COSTLYMISTAKE Not long after Chris Davis fumbled away the opening kickoff, it looked like it would only cost the 49ers a field goal and 10-7 deficit. However, Rashard Robinson com- mitted a running-into-the- kicker penalty on that field goal. After accepting the penalty and taking away the field goals, the Cardi- nals promptly had David Johnson score on a 4-yard run for a 14-7 lead. TURNOVER-TO-TD In the second quarter, Calais Campbell used his 6-foot-8 frame — and pressure from the Cardinals' six-man rush — to tip and inter- cept Gabbert's third-down pass. One play later, Larry Fitzgerald juked corner- back Tramaine Brock for a 21-yard, game-tying touch- down 1:40 before halftime. EARLY LEAD The 49ers took a 7-0 lead on Gab- bert's 9-yard touchdown pass to Jeremy Kerley, 4:17 before halftime. It snapped a string of nine punts com- binedbybothteamstoopen the game. Gabbert and Ker- ley connected four times on the initial scoring drive, with completions of 13, 17, 24andfinally9yardsonthe touchdown pass to a wide- open Kerley on third-and-5. EARLY OVERTHROWS Gabbert badly sailed two throws past open receiv- ers, Garrett Celek and Rod Streater, in the first quar- ter. Celek was open 20 yards down field, Streater 30 yards. Gabbert later had a 35-yard pass go a bit high and off Torrey Smith's hands at the Cardinals' 40. FIRST-HALF PUNTS The Cardinals punted on seven drives before halftime. 49ers FROM PAGE 1 Scoreboard NFL AMERICANCONFERENCE WEST DIVISION W L T Pct PF PA Denver 4 0 01.000 111 64 Oakland 3 1 0 .750 108 106 Kansas City 2 2 0 .500 83 92 San Diego 1 3 0 .250 121 108 EAST DIVISION W L T Pct PF PA New England 3 1 0 .750 81 61 Buffalo 2 2 0 .500 87 68 N.Y.
