ByScottSmith TheAssociatedPress FRESNO California will tighten rules on how much farmers can use a common pesticide listed by the nation's most productive agricultural state as a chemical known to cause cancer, regula- tors told The Associated Press on Thursday. The change doesn't ban the pes- ticide Telone but creates a uniform rule for its application each year. The rule is drawing criticism from farmers who call it a key way to fight pests and fear the crackdown could lead to rising food prices. The U.S. Environmental Pro- tection Agency does not limit an- nual use of Telone, and Califor- nia is the only state to restrict how much can be applied, said Charlotte Fadipe, spokeswoman for the state Department of Pes- ticide Regulation. The 2016 Fire Prevention Week theme is "Don't Wait...Check the Date! Replace Smoke Alarms Ev- ery 10 Years." The week aims to educate the public about the vital importance of replacing the smoke alarms in their homes. Parker urges all res- idents to replace 10-year-old or older smokes alarms to ensure the safety of the community. Red Bluff Fire Chief Ray Bar- ber said Fire Prevention Week is a great opportunity for all fire agencies to reach out to local families to make sure they have the tools in place to prevent fires in their homes, including a fire exit plan. SAFETY 2016 Fire Prevention Week starts on Sunday By Julie Zeeb jzeeb@redbluffdailynews.com @DN_Zeeb on Twitter RED BLUFF Firefighters re- sponded Thursday morning to Food Maxx where an equipment malfunction caused a fire and temporary closure of the store. The store was expected to re- open once power was restored, an employee said. The shopping cen- ter itself was not blocked off dur- ing the incident. Red Bluff Fire was dispatched at 7:42 a.m. Thursday with Cal Fire and Tehama County Fire as- sisting along with Red Bluff Po- lice, who responded to set up a soft perimeter around the store. The fire was contained within 15 minutes of the arrival of the first unit on scene, said Division Chief Matthew Shobash. Smoke was showing from the roof upon arrival of the first unit. The fire and damage was con- tained to the area of origin, which was a freezer, Shobash said. The cause of the fire was the malfunc- tion of a freezer motor. Employees and customers were evacuated from the store and gathered in the parking lot. Em- ployees returned to work about 9 a.m. as fire personnel were clear- ing the scene. Reports were received of smoke being seen from the incident as far away as Baker Road near Wal- bridge Street. Tonight, you are making a pro- found statement with your walk around the courthouse. You are bringing light to darkness. Ev- ery year we hope there will be no more victims and yet here we are. We can only hope there are fewer victims each year. We grieve the losses, pray for those affected and resolve all the more to stop domestic violence and to stop drug and alcohol abuse." Spurr spoke to the audience for a few moments prior to the walk from the courthouse steps north to Walnut Street, south on Main Street and west on Oak Street back to the courthouse. Along the way she out silhou- ettes representative of the eight people in Tehama County who lost their lives to domestic vio- lence within 24 months.
