Memphis, TN 38117 Address Service Requested The WISE OLD OWL a hElping hand Jeffrey Garrety '71 Reflects on Sigma Chi and Serving Others W hen Jeffrey Garrety '71 decided to join Sigma Chi, it was because he admired the general friendship and camaraderie the active brothers had. The depth of the pledge program and its emphasis on the ideals of Sigma Chi kept him involved throughout the years. He loved being around other students that shared deep bonds of fellowship, always provided help and encouragement when needed, and were as the Jordan Standard says, "of fair ability." "There is never a whole year that goes by where you don't see something outstanding coming from the Epsilon Kappa Chapter," he said. During his time at the Epsilon Kappa Chapter, Jeff wanted to help others through the pledging process and served as assistant magister. His favorite times of the year were initiation ritual, parties with bands at the house after a football game, pledges vs. actives football games, Derby Days, the occasional road trip to New Orleans and, of course, road trips to other chapters. Today, Jeff is very impressed with how the campus has changed over the years. He has only been to the Chapter House one time, but he loves that it is still on the corner of Mynders and Brister and is in a central location to campus. Jeff is always present for new house dedications and participation in new building programs. Although he can't be there physically to serve on alumni committees, he is very thankful for those who do, and does what he can to promote the growth of the Chapter. He still keeps up with some of his Epsilon Kappa brothers, and hopes to visit the Chapter at Homecoming. Jeff received a BBA and MBA in finance, and a law degree from the University of Memphis. With this, he went on to own his own law firm, which he has been running since 1984. He is a trial lawyer who represents people injured through the fault of others. Jeff is a board certified civil trial specialist by the National Board of Trial Advocacy and was chosen by his peers to be a member of Super Lawyers. He says that a combination of the goals of the creed and the badge impacted his career path. "I wanted to dedicate my life to making what God made valuable and to contribute to the reduction of injury." Jeff met his wife, Jane, at the University of Memphis and has two daughters, Katie and Beth. In his spare time, he loves to play golf. He is always active in service, whether it is in church or in the community. He has a few titles under his belt as well. He was the president of the Tennessee Trial Lawyer Association in 1992 and served on the TTLA board since 1980. Jeff spent 18 years on commission to the Supreme Court of Tennessee on the rules of evidence and procedure, is the vice chancellor of the Anglican Church of North America, and served as a board member of the U of M National Alumni Association 1983-1987, just to name a few. Jeff is happy and thankful for his academic years and times at Epsilon Kappa, and leaves advice to current undergraduates to aim high and respect themselves. Jeff lives in Jackson, Tenn., and can be reached at jgarrety@garretylaw.com.
