ByJulieZeeb jzeeb@redbluffdailynews.com @DN_Zeeb on Twitter RED BLUFF While temperatures dropped several degrees from the 110-plus that visited the North State three days in a row last week, it was still warm Saturday when the heat got up to 106 in Red Bluff. Residents are no stranger to warmer weather and many who have lived in the area for any length of time have devised ways to beat the heat, including getting out to take care of chores early in the day. "Early bird beats the heat," said Tehama County Jobs Development Liason Amanda Jenkins, who es- caped the worst of the weather by heading out to early events like Good Morning, Red Bluff during the week of warmer weather. Sharon Russell of Red Bluff agrees, and takes her dogs for a walk as early as 6 a.m. before staying indoors the rest of the day when possible. HEAT WAVE Beatingthe 100-plus degree heat Staff report RED BLUFF Two sentinel chick- ens from south of Red Bluff have been confirmed with West Nile Virus by the Center for Vector- borne Diseases. West Nile positive indicators have already been found in 30 counties statewide including the surrounding counties of Butte, Glenn and Shasta, according to a press release issued Mon- day by the Tehama County Mos- quito and Vector Control Dis- trict. This is the first confirmed occurrence in Tehama County since last year. West Nile is transmitted to humans and animals through a mosquito bite. Mosquitoes be- come infected when they feed on infected birds, the release said. With the virus appearing again in Tehama County the best way to avoid the disease is to re- duce exposure to mosquitoes and eliminate their breeding grounds. PUBLIC HEALTH West Nile found in local chickens By Heather Hoelscher hhoelscher@redbluffdailynews.com @DN_Heather on Twitter RED BLUFF A Red Bluff man drowned Saturday morning while kayaking through the China Rapids area of the Sacra- mento River with a family mem- ber. The man, Richard Girard, 59, of Red Bluff fell out of his kayak and lost contact with it around 8:15 a.m., according to a press re- lease issued Monday afternoon by the Tehama County Sheriff's Office. He was pulled to safety on nearby rocks by his family mem- ber but was unconscious. Girard was transported by the Sheriff's Boating Unit to the Bend Bridge boat ramp where he was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel at the ramp. An autopsy conducted Sun- day determined drowning was the cause of death, according to the release. China Rapids is about two miles down river from the Bend ramp. It was reported Girard's kayak overturned while pro- ceeding through the rapids. Gi- rard struggled through the rap- ids despite wearing an approved life vest. A sheriff's spokeswoman said neither alcohol nor drugs was a factor in the accident. Winemaker Aimée Sunseri, a fifth-generation wine-maker whose family partners with the abbey, thanked the crowd for coming and gave a background on the blessing, a prayer for the harvest. Started in the seventh century in Italy, it first came to California before it was even a state when the Franciscan monks held a blessing in 1807 at the Mission San Gabriel. Asking for a show of hands as to who was attending for the first time, Sunseri said she is grateful for the faithful support of those who continue to come NEW CLAIRVAUX VINA MONASTERY HOLDS BLESSING OF THE GRAPES JULIEZEEB—DAILYNEWS Father Paul Mark Schwan, Abbot of Abbey New Clairvaux in Vina, prepares to sprinkle holy water at the Blessing of the Grapes ceremony on Saturday.
