In an effort to better understand Judaism as a religion and cultural and social phenomenon, St. Peter's Episcopal Church is presenting a free six-part program, open to the community, running 7-8:30 p.m. every Thursday through March 25. The first class was Feb. 18, but newcomers are still welcome. The next two meet- ings will be in the church sanctuary, as the church will be hosting PATH (Poor and the Homeless) in the Parish Hall during the month of February. The final four ses- sions will be in the Parish Hall at 510 Jef- ferson St., Red Bluff. Refreshments will be provided. Each session includes a one-hour video by Hebrew University Pro- fessor Isaiah Gafni fol- lowed by a discussion. Gafni is the Sol Rosenbloom Professor of Jewish History and director of Graduate Studies at the Rothberg International School of Hebrew University. Gafni has served as a visiting professor at numerous universities in the United States, among them Harvard, Yale and Brown. Some of the topics discussed include: What is Judaism, Stages of History, The Jewish Library, Jewish Worship – Prayer and the Syna- gogue, God and Man; God and Community, Philosophers and Mys- tics, The Legal Frame- work of Judaism, and Judaism and Others. For more informa- tion, call the church office at 527-5205. Have you ever wondered? I often wonder how many peo- ple are asking themselves what they could be, should be, or would be doing if … only happened. We all could be asking ourselves, "Now what"? Ideas of all kinds may come in abundance, yet the ability to follow through might be questionable. I remind myself to just do the next thing, whatever that may be. Today I found myself looking around and saw many things desiring my attention. I also saw things that I wish I had not noticed that require my attention. Have you ever had those kinds of days where you didn't feel like doing anything, and yet didn't want to "not do" anything? You know, you feel like you are spin- ning your wheels. Yet the famous to-do list didn't go away. In fact it grew even bigger while you were thinking about it and the time was slipping by. With or without being written down, we all have some kind of to-do list. I have decided to view mine in a different light. Try lis- tening to yourself when talking to others concerning the things you need to do. So many times we may say, I have to do this, I have to do that. Then I have to do this too! After saying that so many times, we can even end up not having the energy to get started. We may find ourselves not desir- ing to do anything at all. Whatev- er "that" is now can seem over- whelming. I decided I need to change my thinking as well as my speech. Whenever I hear myself saying I have to do this or that, I catch myself and stop. I correct myself and say, I "get to" do this or that. For example: Because I am in my doctorate program I am required to read a lot of text books, research mate- rials, etc. One of my text books is over nine hun- dred pages, another over eight hundred, and anoth- er over seven hundred pages. I have ten text books for this quarter alone. I found myself wanting to whine about the amount of required read- ing in such a short amount of time. How could I ever accomplish it all? How can I do the additional research required and write all the papers, in between what happens in life and work? Yet when I began to think about the multitudes that have never even had the privilege to learn how to read, I am humbled and thankful. Truly, it is a gift. I share this with you, for if you are reading this, you too have been blessed with the gift of knowledge. We are all at different levels in our education in this journey we call life. There are so many gifts and talents we have to share with those around us. It is my prayer that we see things in a new light. Again, not thinking I have to read or write, but that I get to, and that truly is a blessing. By being able to do so we can com- municate with each other in ways we could not otherwise. Flying back and forth to school gives me the opportunity to see things in a different perspective. Leaving early in the morning, driving in the dark and through the fog to the airport, can be lonely and challeng- ing. Or I can view it as a time to enjoy quiet moments and see the uniqueness of the day as it begins to unfold. Once on the plane, we rise above the clouds and see the majesty of God's creation. At that time I can see the top of mountain ranges cov- ered in snow. From that point of view, the pile of papers in my study doesn't seem so over- whelming after all. So I encourage you to see things in a different light. I hope these words will remain with you. I do not have to write this article, "I get to", and so it is in life. We are all here in the midst of our to- do's, as well as everyone else with their to-do's. I hope we can encourage each other as we "get to" share the gift of another awe- some day.
