Bickert & Co. Pastimes Arts & entertainment Pink Floyd tribute concert In darkened rooms, smoky concert halls or hazy laseriums, fans continue to discover the music of Pink Floyd. From the hypnotic psychedelia of Syd Barrett to the first heartbeats of Dark Side of the Moon to the dramatic fall of the Wall, Pink Floyd has con- tinued to mesmerize its audiences for more than four decades. House of Floyd, a Pink Floyd tribute band, is scheduled to play at the State Theatre in Red Bluff at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 6. The band captures the intoxicating sights and sounds of the original for even the most discriminat- ing fan and accurately recreates all of the nuanced musical complexity and powerful visual imagery of Pink Floyd. The result of this obsessive attention to detail is a total Floyd pro- duction, including music, lights, lasers and video. In addition to the musi- cal talents, House of Floyd features a dazzling light and video show that is sure to leave you wanting more. The band travels with high- ly qualified technical assis- tants who stage and operate the sound, lights, including state of the art laser show, liquid light and video shows to accent the music and entertain audiences of all ages. The show is a recreation of the realistic sound and visual experience of the world's most creative, elu- sive and consistently groundbreaking rock band of all time. New Music Symposium The 6th annual New Music Sympo- sium will take place Thursday and Friday, Feb. 25-26 and will include perfor- mances and master classes that celebrate music from out- side the main- stream. Honoring the late Alfred Loeffler, com- poser, music professor at California State University, Chico, and chairman of the Music Department, this year's symposium features performances of contempo- rary compositions by world-renowned musicians, as well as works and performances by the university's own music students. Works by student composers will be featured during the first concert, 7:30 p.m. Feb. 25 in the Rowland-Tay- lor Recital Hall. Admission is free and open to the pub- lic with a reception to follow. Headlining the event at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 26 in the hall, will be the California E.A.R. Unit new music ensemble from Los Angeles. In it's 28-year history, the ensemble has presented numerous concerts and world premiers, and has worked closely with a veritable who's who of modern com- posers. The ensemble has earned critical acclaim, garnering awards for its contributions to the field of contempo- rary American music. Sponsors include NEA's Access to Excellence, Associated Students, Department of Music and the School of the Arts. Admission for CSU Chico students is free for both events. E-mail to clerk@ redbluffdailynews.com Shasta Symphony concert The second concert of the Shasta Symphony Orchestra's 60th Season will take place at 3:15 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 28, in the Shasta College Theatre. Sponsored by the Shasta College Foundation, the concert will be conduct- ed by Guest Conductor Dr. Peter Cokkinias, Music Director of the MetroWest Symphony in Central Mass- achusetts and faculty member of the Berklee School of Music in Boston. The program will include the 'Tri- umphal March' from Aida by Guiseppe Verdi and the West Coast premiere of Mythos by Francine Trester. Young, tal- ented violin soloist Michael Eby will be featured in the Scottish Fantasy, op. 46, by Max Bruch, and the concert will conclude with the famous tone poem Death and Transfiguration by Richard Strauss. A clarinetist and saxophone player who often records with the Boston Pops, Cokkinias will offer an open Woodwind Clinic for secondary school and college students and advanced woodwind play- ers in the Shasta College Theatre 3:30- 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 26. Sponsored by the Shasta College Foundation, this special appearance on how to double on woodwinds will feature Shasta Sympho- ny soloists and Cokkinias on all wood- winds. The Chico Cabaret will present Lous, a musical by Tod Kimbro and Jeff Forte at 7:30 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays March 4- 27. Directed by Chad Lewis, with musical direction by Jeffrey Childs, Loud is a story of familial dysfunc- tion, primitive Internet dat- ing and recreational bomb- building. Set in the pre-Y2K era to an electrifying alt- rock score, the show explores the minds of five troubled but resilient souls. The show is for mature audiences only.
