ByJillLawless and Danica Kirka The Associated Press LONDON Britain has jumped. Now it is wildly searching for the parachute. The U.K.'s unprecedented decision to leave the Euro- pean Union sent shock- waves through the country and around the world Fri- day, rocking financial mar- kets, toppling Prime Min- ister David Cameron and even threatening the ties that bind the United King- dom. Britons absorbed the overwhelming realiza- tion that their anti-estab- lishment vote has pushed the British economy into treacherous and uncer- tain territory and sparked a profound crisis for a bloc founded to unify Europe af- ter the devastation of World War II. "Leave" campaigners hailed the result as a vic- tory for British democracy against the bureaucratic be- hemoth of the EU. Conservative former London Mayor Boris John- son said "the British people have spoken up for democ- racy in Britain and across Europe," while Nigel Far- age, leader of the hard-right U.K. Independence Party, said "the dawn is breaking on an independent United Kingdom." But for the 48 percent of British voters who wanted to remain — and for the 2 million EU nationals who live and work in Britain, but could not vote — there was sadness, anger and even panic. At a London train sta- tion, commuter Olivia Sang- ster-Bullers called the result "absolutely disgusting." "Good luck to all of us, I say, especially those trying to build a future with our children," she said. The decision launches a yearslong process to rene- gotiate trade, business and political links between the U.K. and what will become a 27-nation bloc, an unprec- edented divorce that could take a decade or more to complete. Cameron, who had led the campaign to keep Brit- ain in the EU, said he would resign by October and left it to his successor to decide when to invoke Article 50, which triggers a departure from European Union. In a referendum marked by notably high turnout — 72 percent of the more than 46 million registered voters — "leave" won with 52 per- cent of the votes. Stock markets plum- meted around the world, with key indexes dropping more than 12 percent in Germany and about 8 per- cent in Japan and Britain. Markets calmed and later recovered some of their losses after Bank of Eng- land Governor Mark Car- ney promised to take "all the necessary steps to pre- pare for today's events." The Dow Jones industrial average dropped 611 points, or 3.4 percent, its biggest fall since August. The euro fell against the dollar and the pound dropped to its lowest level since 1985, plunging more than 10 percent from about $1.50 to $1.35 before a slight recovery, on con- cerns that severing ties with the single market will hurt the U.K. economy and undermine London's posi- tion as a global financial center. The referendum result revealed Britain to be a sharply divided nation: Strong pro-EU votes in the economic and cultural powerhouse of London and semi-autonomous Scotland were countered by sweep- ing anti-establishment sen- timent for an exit across the rest of England, from south- ern seaside towns to rust- belt former industrial pow- erhouses in the north. For many who voted "leave," the act was a re- bellion against the polit- ical, economic and social establishment and the de- rided "experts" — including CEOs, artists, scientists and soldiers — who had written open letters warning of the consequences of an EU exit, or Brexit. Pro-Brexit voters were persuaded by the argument that leaving the EU meant taking back control of im- migration — by abandoning the bloc's principle of free movement among member states — and reclaiming bil- lions that the U.K. pays to Brussels each year. "Remain" supporters said this was a fantasy of sover- eignty in an interconnected world, one that ignored the benefits the EU, and EU workers, bring to Britain. REACTION Markets reel as world absorbs shock of British vote for Brexit MATTDUNHAM—THEASSOCIATEDPRESS Nigel Farage, the leader of the UK Independence Party, celebrates and poses for photographers as he leaves a "Leave.EU" organization party for the British European Union membership referendum in London, on Friday. By Julie Pace The Associated Press WASHINGTON Britain's stunning vote to bolt from the European Union sent political tremors across the Atlantic Friday, fuel- ing Donald Trump's confi- dence that frustrated U.S. voters will back similarly sweeping change and rat- tling Democrats who are banking on Americans ul- timately choosing a more conventional leader in Hillary Clinton. The British referendum was no exact mirror of the U.S. political landscape. The American electorate is far more diverse and Trump is deeply unpopu- lar with minority voters, a serious weakness dogging his Republican candidacy. The referendum also cen- tered on a single issue, while the presidential elec- tion can be as much a de- cision about personality and temperament as can- didates' policies. Yet the parallels be- tween the forces that drove the British vote and those at the core of Trump's campaign are striking. Among them: a belief that globaliza- tion is hurting the work- ing class, and increased immigration is changing the country's character. In both nations, there is strong resentment of po- litical elites who often ap- pear to have little connec- tion to the voters they're supposed to represent. "I think there are great similarities between what happened here and my campaign," Trump said from Scotland, where he was attending the opening of one of his golf courses. "People want to see bor- ders. They don't neces- sarily want people pour- ing into their country that they don't know who they are and where they come from." Fifty-two percent of British voters moved to withdraw from the 27-na- tion European bloc, de- spite dire warnings from Prime Minister David Cameron and other top officials about calamitous economic consequences. Stock markets around the world plummeted after the outcome was announced, Cameron announced his resignation and the Brit- ish pound dropped to its lowest level in 31 years on concerns that severing ties will undermine London's position as a global finan- cial center. In the U.S., Clinton cast the economic uncertainty as a reason America needs "calm, steady, experienced leadership" in the Oval Of- fice — a knock on her of- ten unpredictable and po- litically inexperienced Re- publican rival. Clinton aides also highlighted Trump's assertion Fri- day that a weaker pound would make his Scottish golf course more attrac- tive to visitors. "Donald Trump ac- tively rooted for this out- come and he's rooting for the economic turmoil in its wake," said Jake Sullivan, Clinton's senior policy ad- viser. Other Democrats, openly anxious, warned that the party should not underestimate the willing- ness of angry American voters to choose a more uncertain path in Novem- ber and side with Trump. "It's a timely big splash of cold water the face of Democrats," said Ron Kirk, the former Dem- ocratic mayor of Dallas and U.S. trade representa- tive for President Barack Obama.
