All calves from our breeding cows are exported for beef production on the mainland (continental U.S.) There are several food labels that purchase our beef including Ranch- er's Reserve and Country Natural Beef sold at Whole Foods Markets. "The ranch is 130,000 acres, approximately 100,000 of which are fee simple and the remaining acres are under various land leases. In Hawaii before the Great Mahele, land divisions called 'ahupua'a' ran from the mountain to the sea. Park- er Ranch's lands are not necessari- ly contiguous which made cat- tle grazing chal- lenging. To solve this problem the ranch leases land from the State and private landowners." Today the ranch has 12 cowboys and another 10 to 12 in maintenance for fencing, water, welding, truck repair, and other maintenance to support the cattle operation. There are 14 working in the office, and other jobs. They have approximately 850 miles of fence, over 300 paddocks, and 15 cor- rals. The replacement heifers are bred at 18 months of age, and calve at two and a half years of age, without much calving difficulty. are on grass pasture until reaching 600 to 800 pounds, and then sent to feedlots. They retain own- ership and the calves are in Kansas, Texas, Califor- nia and Oregon. Wild goats on state and federal lands are a huge problem, but their fences are good keeping wild pigs and goats out. The Internet stated guided big game hunts are offered by Parker Ranch for wild pigs, goats and cattle year round, and a meat pig is $525 per animal with a male trophy pig with tusks 2 inches or longer at $800. Wild goats are $700. They have shipped their 400 lb calves by air- plane the last three years from Kona to the main- land in 7 hours at a cost of 40 cents a lb. The calves pounds, but now they rope the calves earlier and have a 30 to 40 lb advantage. The calves are weaned and bunk broke (they learn to eat hay from a bunk).
