4B Daily News – Saturday, June 9, 2012 Religion Faith&Worship Church news Courageous screening Saturday, June 16, at the First Southern Baptist Church, 585 Kimball Road, in Red Bluff. This will be free and the public is invited to attend. Bring a friend. Four men, one calling: To serve and protect. As law enforcement officers they are confident and focused, standing up to the worst the streets have to offer. Yet, at the end of the day they face a challenge that none of them are truly prepared to tackle: Fatherhood. When tragedy strikes home, these men are left wrestling with their hopes, their fears, their faith, and their fathering. Can a new found urgency help these dads draw clos- er to God....and to their children? Protecting the streets is second nature. The movie Courageous will be shown at 7 p.m. on takes courage. Raising their children in a God-honoring way? That Missionaries to speak Scott and Marisa Smith have been mis- sionaries in Spain since 1975. Scott is a 1971 graduate of Red Bluff High. have planted four churches in Spain and were instru- mental in the starting of over 25 others. In helping nascent congrega- tions across the nation, they have guided them through the The Smiths Breaking the spiral of science When I did free lance commentary for the San Jose Mercury News decades ago their editorial policy for- bade the terms "pro-life" and "pro- abortion". I was permitted to use only "pro-choice" and "anti-abortion" in my columns. Forbidden words were changed by editors before the column was published. If a writer or speaker can be forced to say what he does not mean he is – for all practical purposes – prevented from speaking at all. Sometimes that end is accomplished through manipulation – whether the Mercury News or the California Sec- retary of State providing misleading introductions to the Proposition 8 and CLASS Act initiatives. Other times it is by direct prohibition, such as the New York City ordinance requiring crisis pregnancy centers to describe themselves in city approved language – or the numerous statutory and judi- cial decisions forbidding criticism of flaws in evolutionary theory in class- rooms. The agenda is always the same. Views that are not politically correct are to be stifled rather than debated. I recently attended the annual they frame – one back fence conversa- tion at a time and one decision to embraces authentic and God- breathed human life at a time – whatever the issue. William Wilberforce Weekend in Lansdowne, Virginia. The theme this year was, "Breaking the Spiral of Silence." Put on by Chuck Colson's Center for Christian Worldview, Eric Metaxas was master of ceremonies and Joni Earekson Tada a keynote speaker. Manhattan Declaration authors Timothy George, Robert George, and Colson himself, were heard from. The message exploding from this politically active cluster of leaders was unequivocal. The Smiths founded the youth and missions depart- ments for the Assemblies of God of Spain and began the national Preachers Kids' Association. They have been involved in Teen Challenge and taught at the Spanish Bible School where Marisa serves as president of the board. They organize Lay Leader- ship Summits yearly and mentor and coach young pas- tors and ministers. elections do not create culture; culture makes elections. The culture that will elect a return to the destiny of our nation is a culture that adheres to tradi- tional values before presenting them. Such a culture produces favor for its values by demonstrating the good life It is that Scott and Marisa will minister to the congregation at Bethel Assembly of God at 10 a.m. Sunday, June 10. The community is welcome. The church is at 625 Luther Road in Red Bluff. For more information, call the church office 527- 0445. Christian singles group A Singles Praise Social is scheduled to meet 7-8:30 p.m. Friday, June 22, at Assembly of God Church in Cottonwood, 20404 Gas Point Road. For unmarried adults ages 38 to 63. The group enjoys social time and Bible study on non-doctrinal subjects. For more information, call 347-0403. What does that mean? It means we break the spi- ral of silence in a positive way. We refuse to be intimi- dated – the politically correct spiral depends on intimida- tion to enforce silence – but we do not fall into reaction either. We assert our view- point with all the passion and authori- ty with which we hold it. That means when we discuss the right to life we assert first and foremost that the pre- born child is genetically, chemically and physiologically a human being – and that human history gives uninter- rupted support to the viewpoint. It means when we argue for traditional marriage we point out the equally unbroken lineage our viewpoint throughout history – even in those cul- tures that have tolerated or encouraged homosexual expression. means we listen – unlike the other side – to the opposing views and give the same respect to their speakers as we expect for ourselves. It means we offer real compassion – for the damage that is done to abortive parents and the fear that may have motivated them on the one hand – and for the real and painful struggles of gay people and the crushed hope that has been the conse- quence for them wherever gay mar- riage has been in place long enough to demonstrate that nothing of their suf- fering changes in its wake. But it also James Wilson GodTalk During the campaign for Proposi- tion 8 I was invited to be interviewed on our regional National Public Radio. I rightly smelled a trap and it turned out the plan was to pit me against four gay rights activists and expose me as the bigot in the barrel. I secured an invitation for a friend to join me, thus somewhat evening the odds. We prayed first and consistently expressed our views solely in the frame- work of our real concern for the suffering of people who believed erroneously that legalizing marriage would improve and stabi- lize their lives. After the program several people told me they had decided to vote for Prop 8 based on hearing that interview. The phe- nomenon was typical across California in the election. Every member of the Wilberforce Weekend panel of experts agreed that it was compassionate ministries like Carenet and Forty Days for Life doing the heavy lifting in forging the current solid majority of Americans who are pro-life – for example. Our love must be pragmatic and our rhetoric must reflect our love. If in truth we don't have the compassion that is called for we need to ask God to supply it and be silent until He does. And this advice is good for people on both sides of every argument. We serve our cause when we accept it and hurt ourselves when we don't. James A.
