(AP) — Coco Crisp hit a solo homer and bases-loaded triple to match his season total for extra-base hits and the Oakland Athletics won their first series in more than a month, beating the Texas Rangers 7-1 on Thursday. Crisp's big day at the plate helped Bran- don McCarthy (5-3) win his fifth straight decision as the A's took three of four from the two-time defending AL champions. Oakland had lost five straight series and gone winless in nine since beating Tampa Bay two of three May 4-6. But with strong starts from Jarrod Parker, Bartolo Colon and McCarthy and bit more offense than usual, the A's were able to handle the struggling Rangers. Yu Darvish (7-4) gave up six runs, six hits and six walks in 5 1-3 innings as he failed in his bid to become the first eight-game win- ner in the American League and the normal- ly powerful Rangers offense was held down once again. Brandon Moss also homered for Oak- land, which outscored first-place Texas 24-8 in the four games. The A's have scored 33 runs in the past six games after having just 32 in the previous 16. Texas has lost seven of nine games and has been held to two runs or fewer five times in seven games in June, including in all three losses to the A's. The Rangers had been held to two or fewer runs just eight times in the first two months of the season. The A's lost outfielder Yoenis Cespedes in the first inning to a strained left hamstring going from first to third on Seth Smith's RBI single. Cespedes, who came off the disabled list last week from a hand injury, was replaced by Collin Cowgill. San Francisco trumps Padres; Cain wins again SAN DIEGO (AP) — Matt Cain struck out nine in seven innings to win his sixth straight start and Buster Posey, Angel Pagan and Gregor Blan- co homered at Petco Park to lead the San Francisco Giants over the San Diego Padres 8-3 Thurs- day. Ryan Theriot had four hits for the Giants, who committed four errors but won for the ninth time in 11 games. Leading 4-3, Cain loaded the bases with no outs in the sixth on two singles and an error on third baseman Joaquin Arias. Cain escaped the jam by getting pinch-hit- ter Mark Kotsay to fly out to left and Cameron Maybin to hit into a dou- ble play. Special to the DN The Wilcox Golf Club hosted its annual Women's Invitational Golf Tournament this past weekend in near- perfect weather. year's tournament was "Mardi Gras." Although Friday temperatures hov- ered around the 100 degree mark, the Wilcox ladies and their guests from all areas of North- ern California enjoyed a practice round on the beautifully manicured course followed by chip- ping and putting contests and a buffet dinner. The theme for this first round of play on Saturday was 1 best ball on the par 3s, 2 on the par 4s and 1 on the par 5s. Saturday's round was followed by a "horse race," which was won by Linda Arellano, Beth Pil- ger, Loretha Harrah and Sherry Morris. Low gross winners for the tournament from the first flight were as fol- lows: Kellie Froome, Corri Mallony, Teresa Connor and Michele Bai- ley. Second flight – Jen- nie Owens, Torie Eng- land, Cathy Gumm and Leslie Ferrini. Third The format for the flight – Maureen Gonczeruk, Marguerite Hayward, Pam Glover and Christine Perry.
