Batter Up! The SwampDogs are Back by TYLER OLSSON the Fayetteville SwampDogs have cemented themselves into the cultural identity of the greater Fayetteville area. Consistently at the top of the Coastal Plain League both on and off the field, the Dogs have set a new standard in collegiate-summer baseball. This season, the bar is set even higher, with Fayetteville coming off its second CPL Organization of the Year award in the last six campaigns. Summer Program Offers Incentives for Reading by CAREY CLARKE With the weather heating up, we all know what is just around the corner. That's right, summer is nearly upon us. When those big yellow school buses finally drop off the kids on the last day of school, moms and kids alike will all breathe a big sigh of relief. No more homework for two whole months! But, every parent knows that summer is no time to let your brain take a Library System has just the answer to keep your brain healthy this summer. Starting on June 4 and running through July 31, their annual summer reading programs will be in full swing. Sponsored by the Friends of the Cumberland County Library, these programs are sure to keep your kids motivated and reading all summer long. This year's programs all have a night-time theme. For ages birth through 5th grade, the program is called Dream Big: Read! For every 20 minutes of reading logged, participants will receive a star. Prizes are awarded at 4 hours, 8 hours, 12 hours and 24 hours of reading. The teens will be challenged break. In between those trips to the beach and amusement parks, be sure to give that brain plenty of good food, fresh air and exercise, too. The Cumberland County entered into gift certificate drawings. For every five books you read after that you will receive another entry into these drawings. The library wants to keep people of all ages reading. Kids look up to their parents so it is especially important for kids to see parents reading. This program offers an extra incentive to get kids excited and actively involved during the summer. All logs must be turned into any Cumberland County Information Center location by July 31 to be eligible for the grand prize drawing. That stretch includes '80s night, Military Appreciation Night, the second team's 31 contests at "The Swamp." The All American Weekend of Fun kicks off on Thursday, June 14, the fireworks extravaganza of the summer and on Father's Day, it's bring your dog to the ballpark day. The first 500 fans on June 14th receive a retro trucker hat courtesy of Healy Wholesale and Coors, while on June 15 Rick Hendrick Toyota will offer a commemorative gift for the first 500 fans.
