ALUMNA AIMS TO HELP EPSILON SUCCEED Why Hannah Merrill Morgan '05 Supports Delta Gamma G rowing up as a local Columbus girl, Suzanne Harman Scofield '52 knew that Delta Gamma at The Ohio State University was a strong group of women. She knew that she would benefit from the Epsilon Chapter experience during college, but Suzanne quickly discovered that Delta Gamma would remain a large part of her life for many years after graduation. "My high school best friend had an older sister in ΔΓ, so I always heard a lot about it. I was very happy to join, and at one point when I was in college we were the top chapter on campus, so it was a fantastic experience," Suzanne says. Delta Gamma became a part of Suzanne's family life as well, and her younger sister, Jane Harman Hooker '54, joined Epsilon Chapter. Now, Suzanne has two ΔΓ daughters and one ΔΓ granddaughter, and she enjoys sharing the connection with them. Suzanne married her husband, John, a Beta Theta Pi, right after college, and they moved around the country frequently for his job. Whenever they moved, the first thing Suzanne did was look up the local ΔΓ alumnae group, and she made a lot of friends that way. "It's about what you get after college. I got a lot from ΔΓ during college, but I got even more after," Suzanne says. "It's such a lifesaver when you move to a new town, and the Delta Gammas are always welcoming and lots of fun." Although Suzanne does not consider herself to be an outgoing person, Delta Gamma gave her the confidence to go out and meet new people and get involved in new groups. Through this experience, Suzanne became involved with undergraduate chapters alongside other alumnae. "At one point, the Knoxville chapter was in disarray, so another lady from Mississippi and I took it under our wings and helped the executive officers work to make it better. It was such a rewarding experience," Suzanne says. Suzanne stayed involved with the Epsilon Chapter too, and visited for the 100th anniversary, where she enjoyed seeing what the undergraduates were doing. She was involved in supporting the chapter through scholarships, but decided the house needed to be improved and started supporting the capital campaign. With recent growth and large pledge classes, Suzanne would love to see a bigger house for the undergraduates and encourages other alumnae to support the campaign as well. "It's so important to stay in touch with your sisters, whether it's Epsilon or another chapter. I think all alumnae should try because it's very rewarding being in touch with ΔΓs from all over." Delta Gamma Makes an Impact for Suzanne Harman Scofield '52 after College A s a former E p s i l o n C h a p t e r president, Hannah Merrill Morgan '05 spent much of her undergraduate time focused on doing all that she could to make Delta Gamma a strong part of the Greek community at The Ohio State University. Now as an alumna, Hannah is still involved and does what she can to ensure that Epsilon continues to be successful and has a strong future. "I joined ΔΓ because it was the place that I felt the most natural and comfortable while going through the recruitment process," Hannah says. "When I got to Delta Gamma, it was a breath of fresh air and I felt like I could truly be myself. I have never regretted that choice." Delta Gamma became a large part of Hannah's life after she became a member, and she served as both vice president member education and chapter president. Hannah was proud to lead such an incredible group of women, and she has continued her involvement after graduating. She served for two years on House Corporation, was part of the centennial celebration planning committee, and also served on the executive board of the Columbus Alumnae Chapter. "I have stayed a part of the sisterhood because I dedicated my entire college career to it. I ran the entire range of emotions and experiences with the chapter while in college and graduated as who I am because of it. In being involved as an alumna, I have even further deepened my belief in the sisterhood, the wonderful women that are a part of it both from Epsilon and other chapters, and all that is done through the ΔΓ name," Hannah says. Delta Gamma also helped Hannah make the transition from college to her career, as her sorority sisters introduced her to the corporate side of Abercrombie & Fitch. Now, Hannah works with the company doing HR, specifically in the field of associate relations to support the inventory management and merchandise planning teams. Since Epsilon holds such a special place in Hannah's heart, she made the decision to support the chapter by contributing to the Anchoring a New Future for Epsilon campaign. She says supporting the campaign is a great way to get reconnected, especially for younger alumnae who tend to lose touch with ΔΓ in their first few years out of college. For Hannah, this was a way for her not only to set an example for other young alumnae, but also to ensure the future of Epsilon. "I do not want to see my chapter encounter any negative impact to membership simply due to the size of the house and a new requirement by the university," Hannah says. "I put far too much into the chapter and am too proud of it to see a shift like this weaken its presence at OSU. I want my generation to be involved, and I felt that it might as well be me." Delta Gamma helped Hannah mature and taught her how to be a leader, and it also challenged her to be a better person every day. By participating in the campaign, Hannah hopes she will help other women have that same experience. "I want for Epsilon to continue to be one of the strongest Greek organizations on campus. I want the place to which I dedicated so much of my time, energy, and emotion to remain in existence, each year taking in a new class of women who will look back on their time in ΔΓ with as much fondness as I do." Hannah and her husband, David, live in Columbus, Ohio. Her e-mail is hannah_morgan@abercrombie.com. epsilon chApter oF DeltA gAmmA pAge 3
