ByPatriciaMartin Inthesummerof1963 I walked into a church, not knowing God or even understanding what that meant. An hour later, I left that sanctuary as a born- again Christian. It was the day, by God's grace, I met my Savior, Jesus Christ. Even through many tri- als and tribulations, the Lord has sustained and blessed me beyond mea- sure. Life has never been the same since that warm summer day in Exeter, Cal- ifornia when Jesus trans- formed my life. No com- plaints — no looking back desiring the old life — not necessary when my life is held and blessed by the God of all creation! While praying recently I discussed the First and Second Commandments with the Lord. Feeling a surge of inner conviction, I confessed my many fail- ures of submission to the Father. I prayed, "Lord, have I ever really loved you with all my heart, all my soul, all my mind and all my strength?" Deep within I already knew the answer: "Yes with all my heart, all my soul, all my mind, but not with all my strength." "With all my strength" requires not making any choices that take the easy way, in spite of missing God's best for self and oth- ers. Neglecting "all my strength" causes me to take the lazy way of living, instead of actively choos- ing the best way possible. I often wonder how many times I've missed opportu- nities to love my neighbor as myself. Most Christians are wonderfully refreshed by the Holy Spirit, as they re- alize the touch of the Mas- ter's Hand upon their soul, and then respond in re- pentance. Taking up the challenge for a closer walk with the Lord is never burdensome; rather it ig- nites us afresh and anew! This Jesus promised when He said in Mark 12:30,31, "And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. This is the first command- ment. And the second, like it, is this. You shall love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other com- mandment greater than these." We are literally called to find out what pleases our Lord in Ephesians 5:10. Studying and medi- tating upon the Word of God will provide every- thing we need to under- stand how to please the Lord inasmuch as Scrip- ture clearly defines our love for God and His for us. "He who has My com- mandments and keeps them, he it is who loves Me; and he who loves Me shall be loved by My Fa- ther, and I will love him, and will disclose My- self to him" (John 14:21). John 14:33 says, " If any- one loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him, and make our abode with him." Scripture challenges us to choose who we will serve. This is expressed through many Biblical principles throughout the Word of God, as well as very specific Scriptures. "And if it is disagreeable in your sight to serve the Lord, choose for your- selves today whom you will serve: whether the gods which your fathers served which were beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living; but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord" (Joshua 24:14,15). Personally I am very grateful for God's patience and grace in my life. We know our own areas of weakness, and God pro- vides faithfully in meet- ing those needs. 2 Corin- thians 12:9 says, "… My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness." We can also re- joice when reading 2 Pe- ter 1:3,4: "as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and vir- tue, by which have been given to us exceeding great and precious prom- ises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, hav- ing escaped the corrup- tion that is in the world through lust." Galatians 2:20 states, "I have been crucified with Christ; it is no lon- ger I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me." Therefore, we are not weak and unable to please our Lord! How wonder- ful. Christ lives in the born-again Christian. We can now look upon Jesus, and not ourselves. Christ in us is the hope of glory. Christ has all power, and provides all that we need. He is our refuge, our strength, our strong tower, our deliverer, our healer, our Savior and our soon coming King. Serve Him with gladness, vic- tory and joy. PatriciaMartinisa seasoned intercessor who leads the Jehovah Rapha Ministry of prayer and healing in Red Bluff. GOD TALK TheFirstandSecond Commandments Author Rita Giordano, a Shasta Lake resident, will be holding a book sign- ing event at 11 a.m. today at Grace Place Tea House, 1448 Pine St. in Redding for her book "Destiny's Star." In these troubling times many people believe Israel should be broken up and given away. But this nation has a mandate from God, Himself, to exist. God even laid out the borders of the country. We know, from the Holy Bible, the word of God, that Jesus will rule and reign in that land. Jerusalem will be the capital city of the world. We expect to see many ex- traordinary events take place there soon pursuant to prophesies in God's word. Giordano longs to illus- trate the beauty of a na- tion God has ordained, as well as provide insight into these heroes and heroines and the circumstances they faced. People continue to tell Giordano they don't un- derstand the Bible. She says she wants the reader to see it through the eyes of love. As a Sunday school teacher, she has often told these same stories to her students. This book is a story of the birth of a nation and God's unfailing promise to pro- tect and preserve His cho- sen people. REDDING Lo ca l au th or t o si ng c op ie s of h er l at es t bo ok By Rachel Zoll The Associated Press Struggling to avoid a split over gay rights, the top policy-making body of the United Methodist Church on Wednesday nar- rowly approved a full re- view of all church law on sexuality, amid an emo- tional meeting roiled by talk of schism. Delegates at the Meth- odist General Conference, meeting in Portland, Ore- gon, voted 428-405 to delay all consideration of LGBT- related proposals. Instead, the delegates created a commission that will spend at least two years review- ing policy on the subject, contained in the Methodist Book of Discipline, with the goal of developing a plan to address their differences. The denomination has 12.7 million members worldwide and is the third- largest faith group in the U.S. "We are at a precipice," said Lonnie Chafin, a dele- gate from the Northern Il- linois Annual Conference, or church district, speak- ing in favor of forming the commission. "There is urgency before us. The church might divide." While other mainline Protestant groups, includ- ing the Episcopal Church and the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), have ap- proved same-sex marriage, the Methodists have upheld a policy they adopted in 1972, calling same-gender relationships "incompatible with Christian teaching." As gay rights gained ac- ceptance in broader soci- ety and in other churches, Methodist LGBT advo- cates stepped up pressure for the denomination to lift prohibitions on ordination for people with same-sex partners, along with a ban on gay weddings. However, the denomination is on a more conservative path, with its greatest growth in the U.S. South and over- seas, regions where conser- vative views predominate. Of the 864 delegates at the Oregon meeting, 30 per- cent are from Africa. A recent survey by the church found about 54 per- cent of U.S. pastors and lay people in leadership roles agreed with the church re- strictions on gays and les- bians, although only 41 percent of congregants held the same view. The Rev. Adam Hamilton, who leads Church of the Resur- rection in Leawood, Kan- sas, estimates two-thirds of Methodists are centrists who could live with those differences. But Methodist conservatives and liberals have become even more po- larized over the years, rais- ing questions about how they can stay in the same church. Matt Berryman, head of Reconciling Ministries Network, a Methodist LGBT advocacy group, said the commission plan "sig- nals hope." The Rev. Rob Renfroe, president of Good News, a caucus of evangel- ical Methodists, said the plan has "some potential to resolve our differences" but is "fraught with peril," de- pending partly on whether conservative views will be heard.
