Page 3 University of Oklahoma SiSterS Leading the Way on CampuS, in the Community, around the WorLd Collegians Demonstrate the Importance of Active Participation Telling a Story, Helping to Save Lives K endall Burchard '12 is a professional writing major in the Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication. Last semester, she was challenged to demonstrate what she learned through writing her 53,000-word novel, The Taming, which was released on Amazon in November. A dollar from each book sold went to Soonerthon, OU's largest student-led philanthropy event, in order to show support for the Tri Delts leading the fundraising efforts. Kendall is the chief of PE-ET, the honor society for the top 10 seniors, and chairman of Crimson Club, OU's official ambassador organization through the Office of the President. Contributing to the Betterment of the Community E mily DeSantis '12 is a visual communications major in the College of Fine Arts. Through her program, she learned how to apply graphic design to different platforms from print posters, magazines, and books to technology-based websites, apps, and videos. Emily studied abroad in both Italy and Brazil through her involvement in the President's Leadership Class. During her time at OU, Emily remained active around campus, including executive positions on CAC Oklahoma Creativity Festival, Graphic Design Association, Big Event, CAC Soonerthon, and ConnectU. She helped co-found ConnectU, which helps integrate new students into the community by providing them a mentor who can provide them the resources and tools to be successful during their time at the university. She helped raise $721,942 for the kids through CAC Soonerthon. Creating Unity through Giving A ngelina Curiel '13 is majoring in health and exercise science and dreams of becoming a physician's assistant. She is currently in Arezzo, Italy, taking classes in Italian film and history, Italian 4, art history, and global environmental changes. Last year, she served as the social chairman and was a part of the recruitment team. Angelina has volunteered at the Oklahoma City Children's Hospital since 2014 and will continue when she returns to Norman. Angelina was a small group leader at Camp Crimson and has served on the Soonerthon executive board for two years in a row. Angelina plans to go on a two-week medical mission trip to Piura, Peru, in the near future. Making a Difference, One Service Act at a Time P axton Martin '13 will graduate in December with a degree in mathematics with plans to enter medical school and is minoring in Spanish. She loves to learn about other cultures and sees the value in being able to communicate outside of her first language. Paxton volunteers at OU Medical Center as a weekly greeter and does inpatient rounding. She also works with Little Flower, serving the underprivileged with free medical care. This summer, she is going on a medical mission trip through Global Brigades to Panama City, Panama. In her free time, she tutors high school and college students in mathematics, the sciences, and ACT prep. She loves to help others see their academic potential. Paxton is researching the use of mathematics in medicine with the assistance of the Honors College. She is a member of OU Cousins, Pre-Medicine Club, and Alpha Epsilon Delta, a pre-medical honors fraternity. She was the previous academic development chairman for the chapter and part of the standards committee. Making a Lasting Impression across the World A bbey Taylor '13 is pursuing an honors dual degree in women and gender studies and public affairs and administration with a minor in psychology. She plans on attending law school after graduating in 2017. Abbey is the student government association election chairman and oversees all aspects of the campus elections at OU. She is a consultant for the Oklahoma Group, which offers pro bono consulting services to nonprofits in central Oklahoma. She has studied abroad in both Italy and Brazil, and she plans on studying in Ireland this summer. Last summer, she interned at a political consulting and media firm in Washington, D.C., that was hired by multiple U.S. Congressional candidates and a presidential candidate. She was the recipient of the P.A.C.E Award, the President's Award for Outstanding Freshman, and the President's Award for Outstanding Sophomores. Now, she waits to hear back about Outstanding Junior.
