A Lifetime of Loyalty Alumna Honored at 2015 Founders' Day T his year's recipient is no stranger to challenges or hard work. After the death of their father, alone she raised five children—four boys and a girl. She is a teacher, as much by example as by training and profession. Often, her third and fourth grade students with few resources were beneficiaries of her financial and educational support. Her friends describe her as loyal, loving, and quiet. They say she prefers supporting roles to leadership roles, but that she is always among the first to offer assistance whenever she sees a need. She is a faithful parishioner in her church. As a person for whom language always has been a joy, she found special pleasure in her evening job teaching English as a second language and to those who sought to qualify for American citizenship. Our honoree, while an Oklahoman, became a Tri Delta at Randolph-Macon in Ashland, Virginia. Two years later, she returned to the University of Oklahoma to complete her education and then affiliated with Theta Gamma. The chapter and the friends she made there, and afterward in Oklahoma City, became a great joy to her as a collegian and as an alumna. She says those women have been her good friends throughout her life, and they are good women, of excellent character, and are accomplished. She feels privileged and proud to be associated with them. She continued her involvement and joy as an alumna member of Theta Gamma, supporting our many previous fundraisers such as garage sales, bazaars, and art shows. She could be found sorting, pricing, and boxing early attic treasures for one such sale—a dusty, back-breaking task, just the kind of behind-the-scenes tasks for which she is known. All Lifetime Loyalty honorees have been active and supportive of Tri Delta for 50 years or more. Some are known also for their leadership role in the community, as well as in the fraternity. However, the primary purpose of this award is to honor a member's lifetime of love of Tri Delta and her sisters. While she has served as treasurer of the alumnae chapter, this year's recipient is best remembered for having shown her sisterly love in a myriad of thoughtful, unrecognized, and consistent ways. When Joan Butell Hambrick, Baker University '47, was recovering from hospitalization and could not drive, she gave up her day to drive Joan to a P.E.O. state workshop and waited all day while Joan did her presentations. It was our recipient who also became known as the Tri Delta bag lady, carrying change back and forth in a bank bag to luncheon meetings while serving for years as unofficial treasurer for the Golden Circle before the chapter actually obtained a checking account for our group. That responsibility included spending her time at a table checking us in while the rest of us enjoyed a time of fellowship before each meeting. Let us celebrate Anna Baker Headley, Randolph-Macon '52, for her love and service to Delta Delta Delta and follow her example of a perpetual bond of friendship.
