GARRYJONES—THEASSOCIATEDPRESS Handler Fernel Serrano fixes the hair of Nyquist in Louisville, Ky., Sunday. Nyquist won the Kentucky Derby on Saturday. ByDavidGinsburg TheAssociatedPress BALTIMORE Whenitcomestoselect- ing a stall for his Kentucky Derby win- ner at Pimlico Race Course, trainer Doug O'Neill doesn't care much for tradition. He'd rather go with his own tested method for success. Unbeaten Nyquist arrived at Pim- lico on Monday and was eased into Stall 24 of the Stakes Barn with six other horses trained by O'Neill. The Kentucky Derby winner is usu- ally kept in highly regarded Stall 40 of the Preakness Barn, home of sev- eral Triple Crown champions, includ- ing Secretariat and Seattle Slew. O'Neill spurned Stall 40 in 2012 with Derby winner I'll Have Another, choosing instead to keep the horse in the Stakes Barn. I'll Have Another won the Preak- ness, and Nyquist's handlers can only hope this horse does likewise. "It really keeps the horses happy. It worked with I'll Have Another and we're going to do the same thing with Nyquist," assistant trainer Jack Sis- terson said. Nyquist improved to 8-0 after winning by 1 lengths at Churchill Downs. He will seek to make in nine a row in the 1 3/16-mile Preakness on May 21. Nyquist was transported by plane from Kentucky on Monday afternoon. He covered the final leg of the trip with a police escort from Baltimore- Washington International Airport be- fore being led to the barn shortly af- ter 6:30 p.m. It isn't often that the Derby win- ner arrives so soon in Baltimore, but that's what O'Neill and owner J. Paul Reddam did four years ago and the strategy proved sound. "We can do anything with Ny- quist," Sisterson said. "It worked with I'll Have Another. So we kept kind of the same routine and got him over here early. The Spartans played as vis- itors in the rescheduled game originally set for Thursday in Chico, which was cancelled due to rain. They got on the board first with a run in the bottom of the first and tacked on two more in the third, which Kolby Button kept the Panthers' bats in check. Bryce Sinclair, on his 18th birthday, took over on the mound and pitched two shutout innings with 2 hits, no walks, striking out 3. The Spartans passed their lead with another 4 runs in the fifth. A run in the top of the sixth was answered with a Chico run in the bottom half to keep the game alive. Red Bluff erased all doubt with 6 runs in the bottom of the seventh and Lane Pritchard shut down the Panters to finish it. Pritchard led the Spartans, going 3-4 with two doubles, 4 runs and 2 RBI; Austin Young- blood was 2-3 with 2 runs and 2 RBI; Payton Edwards was 2-5 with a run and 2 RBI; Eric Spencer was 2-3 with 2 runs and an RBI; Button was 2-5 with a run and 2 RBI; Sinclair was 2-5 with a run; Ryan Gamboa was 1-2 with a double and an RBI and Tanner Tweedt was 1-3 with a run. CARDINALS 11, ANDERSON 1 The Corning Cardinals punched their ticket Friday to a home playoff start with big win, 11-1 over the Anderson Cubs in 5 in- nings. By Graham Dunbar and Samuel Petrequin The Associated Press GENEVA Michel Platini will re- sign as UEFA president after failing to overturn his ban at the Court of Arbitration for Sport, which cut his sanction from six to four years. Platini called the verdict a "deep injustice" and said he will now step down from the UEFA position he has held since 2007. CAS effectively removed Plat- ini from world soccer by ensur- ing his ban "corresponds to the duration of a presidential term," the court said in a statement. Platini's current UEFA man- date expires in March 2019, and the next FIFA presidential elec- tion is due in May 2019. "This decision is inflicting me a suspension whose length will de facto prevent me — as if by chance — from bidding for the next FIFA presidential election," Platini said in a statement. Leaving UEFA also frees him to pursue an appeal to Swiss courts and "establish my integ- rity in this case," Platini said. Switzerland's supreme court can overturn verdicts if legal process is abused but will not re-judge the evidence. The court ruled that Platini was guilty of conflict of inter- est for taking a $2 million pay- ment from FIFA approved by Sepp Blatter in 2011. The money was uncontracted extra salary for working as Blatter's presi- dential adviser from 1999-2002, and was largely unknown until it was revealed by Swiss federal prosecutors last September. "I think winning an MVP would be a pretty good reward regardless of what the votes are," Warriors coach Steve Kerr said. Curry would become the first Warriors player to win multiple MVP awards and the third point guard in league history to do so, joining Magic Johnson and Steve Nash. Curry, 28, was widely believed to be the repeat winner of the award during a season in which the Warriors compiled a 73-9 re- cord for the most wins in a single season in league history. Curry smashed his own sin- gle-season record by making 402 3-pointers this season and led the league in scoring with 30.1 points per game.
