Wet weather did not deter hundreds from at- tending the event, which had 428 SERRF par- ticipants and an additional 138 friends and fam- ily members preregistered, SERRF Recreation Specialist Beth Birk said. Members of the state Water Resources Control Board — czars of the state's drought emergency program — will decide May 18 whether to remove the 11-month-old statewide order. The conservation effort required at least 20 percent water conservation overall by most of the water districts serving California's nearly 40 million people. While many people be- lieve that Cinco De Mayo is a Mexican Independence Day it actually celebrates a pivotal 1862 battle, the Battle of Puebla, against France not Spain, accord- ing to the announcer at Saturday's event. The bat- tle was significant because it was the beginning of France leaving all Latin American countries, she said. The Mexican Inde- pendence Day is actually celebrated Sept. 16. The event is a tradi- tion, said Lusi Rios, vice president of Latino Out- reach of Tehama County. It's also a way for the La- tino community to gather and for all people to learn what is out there in the community by wandering through the vendor area. By Julie Zeeb jzeeb@redbluffdailynews.com @DN_Zeeb on Twitter CORNING Light rain did not keep car enthusiasts away from Northside Park Saturday where the Corn- ing May Maydness Car Show took place with 23 cars in attendance. The number was just slightly lower than the 25 that came to the Business Choice Preview Show Fri- day where seven local busi- nesses sponsored an award to give to the car of their choosing. At the Friday event, there were 140 din- ners, prepared by Ranch- er's Deli and Meats, sold. "We've been getting calls all day asking if we're doing the event rain or shine and we tell them yes we are," Corning Chamber of Commerce Executive Di- rector J.C. Pendergraft said. "We've had great at- tendance for the weather. We know the time, money and effort people put in their cars and to see them come out in the rain is ex- traordinary." One vehicle came from as far away as Oregon while another had Santa Ana painted on the side, but there was also a good showing of locals such as Ron Warner of Tehama who brought his 1929 DeSoto, complete with a trunk secured on the back. A local band by the name of Last Vultures performed for Saturday's crowd while Friday saw another local band, Cre- tin's Cattle, perform. There were also 18 vendors who turned out for the Satur- day event. The car show, typically held on Solano Street, had a new location for 2016 brought about by the fact that the normal area for the show is presently un- der construction.
