Located on the corner of Lincoln & Walnut Pastimes Arts & entertainment Hot Passions from Cold Climates The North State Sym- phony resumes its season Feb. 20 and 21 in Redding and Chico with a fiery program "Hot Passions from Cold Climates." Natalya Shkoda, a pianist born in the Ukraine, will perform the First Piano Concerto of the Russian master Sergey Prokofiev, who also wrote "Peter and the Wolf." Shkoda, now on the facul- ty at California State Uni- versity, Chico, has per- formed throughout Europe and the US. Shkoda is looking for- ward to playing the solo with the Symphony. "Prokofiev's First Piano Concerto is one of the happiest and most enjoyable piano pieces I have ever played," she said. "It is a Russian Concerto, but it is not tragic at all. In my opin- ion, it is technically daz- zling, musically demand- ing, structurally convinc- ing and also absolutely entertaining for the per- former and the listener alike." The symphony will play the second Sympho- ny of Jan Sibelius of Fin- land. Sibelius wrote romantic and energizing music, inspired partly by Finnish legends. He tried to awaken nationalistic feelings in the people of Finland. Also on the program is an overture by Mikhail Glinka, an aristocrat from the 19th Century, and the first important Russian composer. "This is not only won- derful music," says Kyle Wiley Pickett, the music director. "It's also filled with the history of eastern Europe. When Glinka wrote, Russia was a coun- try ruled by the Czar. By the time of Prokofiev, the Russian Revolution was in the air. Up in Finland, coming out from under the Russian domination made Sibelius a hero to his country." North State Sympho- ny's performances in Redding and Chico are supported by CSU, Chico's School of the Arts and by businesses and individuals in the region. The concerts are co-sponsored by Shasta Regional Medical Center and by Spelts Wealth Management. Redding's Cascade Theatre sees the first per- formance at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 20.
