Robertson '89 T he members of Sigma Chi have a long- standing tradition of distinguishing themselves as leaders in their communities. They dedicate themselves to serving others and giving back. Since his graduation, Thomas W. Cole '82 has demonstrated outstanding dedication and loyalty to the university and its athletic programs. It is because of this involvement that IU presented him with one of their most prestigious alumni honors, the Clevenger Award. "It was an honor to receive this award," he said. During the awards ceremony in Henke Hall, Tom had the privilege to give an acceptance speech. "My speech centered on the bible verse Luke 12:48 'When someone has been given much, much is required in return.'" He challenged people to think of that verse in the context of valuing what they each received from IU. "For me, it was more than valuing an athletic scholarship, but valuing the education that has opened doors, the lifelong friendships that have been built, and the opportunity to swim for the greatest swim coach of all time, Doc Counsilman. I have been blessed beyond measure by my connection to IU and, as a result, I will always look for ways to give back." Tom is also a member of the Dean's Council at the Kelley School of Business, and actively recruits students from IU each year. Though the swim team played an important role in Tom's experiences at IU, Lambda Chapter was also a significant part of his life. "Sigma Chi is a great Fraternity and I am fortunate to have had the opportunity to live in the house while attending IU." Through his membership, Tom learned the value of true friendship, in addition to other core values that have guided him both professionally and personally. "It is great to be a member of an organization that has provided me with such close friends and good memories." Today, Tom remains in contact with many of his Fraternity brothers. "My closest friends are still my Sigma Chi roommates. We had a lot of fun when we lived in the house, and we have had even more fun together since we have graduated." He and his roommates from Room C get together several times a year, including trips to IU for football and basketball games, and an annual trip to Florida with their wives. "We actually started doing monthly conference calls so we can all keep in touch—investing in our friendship has become a higher priority for all of us." Tom and his wife, Kim, live in New York, N.Y., where he runs the Leveraged Finance Group for Citibank. They have three children: Jenna, Tara, and Jono, and one grandson, Braden. Tom hopes that Braden will have the opportunity to join Sigma Chi when he gets to college. In his free time, Tom runs a men's ministry, where 100 men meet weekly at a mid-town restaurant. "We create a fun environment where men can be authentic and transparent, with the goal of building friendships where we can encourage each other to be better men. It is important to interpret life through the lens of scripture—to love everyone, judge no one, and forgive anyone." You can connect with Tom at twciu82@aol.com.
