UPDATE THE TOMAHAWK l http://isuthetachi.org f Theta Chi Fraternity - Iowa State l @ISU_ThetaChi F I N D U S O N L I N E Recruitment Recommendations Do you know of a young man planning to attend Iowa State next fall who would be a good addition to Theta Chi's membership? Please send his information to Joey Rogers '17 at (815) 262-7906 or jjrogers@iastate.edu. new memBers equipped to live out thetA Chi prinCiples T his semester, I've taken the innovative new member education program set by our past marshal, Zach Stuart '17, and developed it further. After the most recent class of new members was initiated, we received feedback on their experience and opinions with the new member program. Their input ultimately shaped the ideas for the new program. We've wiped out the need for PowerPoint learning and replaced it with activities and projects to facilitate better learning and more teamwork. At the end of the program, the new guys will work together to create a member education lesson plan of their own. In essence, they will become the teachers to the rest of us. The focus for their class this semester has shifted toward personal development alongside member development. In the past, we've had members who knew the facts and ideals of the chapter, but struggled in living out these ideals in their everyday lives. That's what this program will attempt to accomplish. To learn ways to practically carry out these ideals, each week's class will have a different life theme and at the end of class we will have a short discussion about what things we can do to follow this theme for the week. For example, one theme is "extending an assisting hand." To carry this out, the new members will have a project for the week called "Theta Chi Random Acts of Kindness." On top of the group's teamwork activities, projects, and general education on the ideals of the fraternity, I'm encouraging the initiated members to play an active role in the new members' experience. With help from the active membership, the wisdom of Alumni Advisor Jon Fleming '75, and the guidance of Graduate Student Advisor Jennifer Hormell, these young men will mature and develop to become our future leaders.
