He was fortunate to get a job despite the difficult environment and turned the opportunity into a decades-long career in the industry. He is currently an area manager for a company that distributes crop protection chemicals. "Working in agriculture lets me be a part of producing food, fiber, and energy for the world. It's blessed me greatly and I've had a lot of opportunities to travel and network with people." Besides his career, Paul has stayed active traveling with his friends and family, including his wife, Annette, five children, and seven grandchildren. He volunteers within his church and community of Wayland, Iowa, builds homes with Habitat for Humanity takes missions trips to areas affected by floods to rebuild houses, and helped build a church in Equador. Even at this point in his life, Paul still looks back with fondness on his time as an undergraduate in Theta Chi. Between house parties and attempting to jump Lake LaVern on a bicycle, Paul learned concrete lessons about leadership and skills from the franternity—skills like running a business meeting and managing people, which he used as the owner of several convenience stores. "During my career, I've realized that I learned a great deal from Theta Chi. Our Creed ends by saying: '…I shall do all in my power to perpetuate its ideals, thereby serving my God, my country, and my fellow man.' I've found that in anything you do, if you keep those three principles in mind, it's very tough not to be successful." With those values in mind, Paul has chosen to give back to Theta Chi through Alpha Mu's Brotherhood Society. The society is a chance for him to repay what Theta Chi gave to him as a young man. "Financially, I struggled in college. My father passed away a month before I was activated. But I received moral support from the brothers and an opportunity to earn some of my room and board by being chapter head steward and kitchen steward. I offset a lot of my living expenses, which gave me the opportunity to stay in school. If it wasn't for my brothers, I never would have graduated from ISU. The Brotherhood Society is my way of repaying what was given to me." Paul can be reached at pvtersch@farmtel.net. Paul Von Tersch '80 Joins Brotherhood Society to Repay what Theta Chi Gave to Him
