Unilever has selected more than 10 participat- ing items from its food and personal care brands to be part of this effort. "Unilever is proud to be partnering with Raley's again in 2012 to help local food banks within the communities we jointly serve," said Vinit Patel, Unilever Director of Customer Development. "This year, Unilever, with the support of Raley's customers, are helping even more families by increasing our donation to the local food banks. We know that food banks' needs remain high during the summer but that this season isn't top of mind for most people to make personal dona- tions. Our support is needed now so food banks can prepare to help meet the critical needs during the summer months." Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) will be able to spend $192 million to extend a range of voluntary demand response and load-management programs for customers, including SmartAC, PeakChoice and the Home Area Network pilot. The SmartAC program is a long-successful program whereby res- idential customers can voluntarily agree to have their thermostat adjusted by one or two degrees during peak demand hours, typically summer afternoons on hot weekdays. The air conditioning continues to operate and most customers report not even noticing the difference. The reduced electric demand not only reduces strain on the power grid, but customers will also receive a $50 rebate for participating. Customers can also override the automated process so their thermo- stat is not adjusted. Customers report high satisfaction with the pro- gram in surveys and more than 95 percent of our customers have cho- sen to remain with the program. Utility to expand voluntary Utilities depend on demand response, in which groups of cus- tomers agree ahead of time to cut their energy use during times of peak demand, to keep the grid stable during hot summer months when electricity demand often spikes to its highest levels. State offi- cials also favor such conservation measures for environmental rea- sons, particularly when they allow grid operators to avoid having to order additional power plants to be switched on to provide more elec- tricity. Customers can conserve electricity by using appliances and charging their mobile phones and other electronic devices in the morning or after 7 p.m., and cutting air conditioning use. About SmartAC, PeakChoice and Home Area Network Pilot SmartAC is an optional program whereby PG&E can turn down customers' air-conditioning by a degree or two during times of high demand on the grid. The subtle change by a couple degrees helps reduce customer costs and improves grid reliability. In exchange, par- ticipating customers receive a rebate check. PeakChoice reduces monthly energy bills for business customers. It credits them for their pledge to reduce power use during high- demand days, even in the absence of high demand days. In November, PG&E introduced plans to roll out a device that pro- vides customers with information to help them save energy and money. The utility's Home Area Network or HAN allows customers to see the price they're paying for electricity and how that changes throughout the month.
