Left unbridled and unencumbered, volunteers like Jan Spell and the Hope Mills Chamber's Board of Directors will provide the leadership needed to complement community, business and government. It was also Dozens of businesses owners and executives, hundreds of dignitaries, town and county offi cials all came together last week to celebrate business and commerce in the town of Hope Mills. It was the Wild, Wild West at Hope Mills' 2012 Annual Chamber Dinner and wild it was! It was an evening of fun and a refreshing and inspiring celebration of volunteerism, fi scal achievements, commitment and business growth. All under the leadership of six-term Chamber President Jan Spell. No organization in Cumberland County could be more energized as a result of her dedication and enthusiastic leadership. It was refreshing to see and celebrate Spell's home-grown loyalty, work ethic and vibrant personality that has been a nurturing catalyst to the growth of small businesses and economic development in Hope Mills. Realizing that small businesses propel a healthy economy it is no wonder she garners the respect of residents, business owners and government offi cials alike. No doubt, Hope Mills is on reassuring and refreshing to see Hope Mills Mayor Jackie Warner, and the majority of the town council not only in attendance but, actually supporting and taking part in this celebration of business. Hope Mills Chamber staff are volunteers dedicating hours of their time. Let me emphasize that Spell and her board all serve as dedicated but unpaid volunteers like the inexhaustible Ambassador of the Year, Jean Clark. The Chamber's only paid employee is its executive director, Dee Callahan, who is talented, focused and part time. The Mayor swearing in the new Chamber Staff for 2012-2013. there is much to be learned from people like Jan Spell, Jean Clark and the success of the Hope Mills Chamber of Commerce. After all, what's happening in Hope Mills is not magic, just dedication, hard work and vision. Our newspaper is proud to support these efforts. Many other Cumberland County organizations could learn a great deal from their example. The results would be obvious. Thanks for reading Up & Coming Weekly. It is my hope businesses and government here will continue to work together for the betterment of residents and businesses in Cumberland County. Needless to say, there are still a few local distractors and holdouts to mainstream progress as indicated by their waterless lake, dysfunctional dam and the sitcom like grandstanding that sometimes takes place at town council meetings. All this reminds us that they may still have a way to go.
