JANUARY 20-26, 2016 UCW 17 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM Every year the Museum of the Cape Fear hosts the Civil War Quiz Bowl. This year it is on Jan. 28 at 7 p.m. This free family-friendly event is a fun way to learn and test your knowledge whether participating or watching. "Quiz bowls are much like game shows. Contestants compete to finish in first place and prizes are awarded," Leisa Greathouse, the museum's Curator of Education explained. "Our quiz bowl involves up to 20 contestants who answer questions about the Civil War. Contestants are allowed three wrong answers, or strikes, before they are out of the game. We have two first-place finishers: youth 16 and under, and adult." The very first Civil War Quiz Bowl had about 20 contestants and 30 audience members. Over the years the event has grown in popularity to where the Quiz Bowl can no longer fit in the museum's multi-purpose room. Luckily a partnership with the Headquarters' Library means that the larger Pate Room will be this year's location, it's a "win-win" collaboration Greathouse said. The host and creator of the 15-year-old Annual Civil War Quiz Bowl is Jim Greathouse. He is now the Senior Museum Specialist with the City of Fayetteville for Veterans Park and the Fayetteville Area Local History and Transportation Museum. He has a tremendous amount of knowledge about the Civil War and experience with the Quiz Bowl, but the most difficult yearly challenge remains keeping the questions and categories new and fresh so that returning participants and audience members are still challenged and engaged. "Even if we use the same categories each year, the questions have to be edited and revised and new questions written. Over the years, though, we have accumulated approximately 2000 questions and we typically use less than 100 each year, allowing us to recycle questions every other year or so," Leisa Greathouse explained. Participating in and watching the Quiz Bowl is free, but donations are welcome. The number of contestants is limited to 20, but the public is encouraged to come and enjoy the contest. Thanks to the Museum of the Cape Fear Historical Complex Foundation, Inc., winners receive a $50 gift card from Barnes & Noble. For the first time in the 15 years of the Civil War Quiz Bowl, Greathouse released this year's categories to help both contestants and audience members better shape their preparations. "A few of the categories will help participants gear their study in certain directions. Others, not so much. For example, one category is 'True or False.' You don't know what you are going to get, but at least you have a 50-50 chance of getting the answer correct. The categories are: 1861, 1862, 1863, 1864, 1865, Literature, From Fayetteville to Durham's Station, True or False, Multiple Choice, Aye Aye Captain, Who Am I, Mixed Bag, North Carolina's Story and Chronology," she said.
