Country Lifehome Stained glass garden The ways to improve the look of a home are practically infinite. From lighting and painting to door hard- ware and wall art, the sheer number of possible home improvements is enough to send your mind reeling. Stained glass is a home improve- ment few truly understand—or take advantage of. Mick Needham, owner of Needham's Stained Glass in downtown Chico, says there are a lot of misconceptions surrounding stained glass. & Give your landscape the artist touch "Unless you come in and look at our catalog, you might not know the capabilities of stained glass," said Needham. "On a daily basis, people come in and say, 'Wow, I didn't know you did all of this.'" Ask people where they've seen a memorable work of stained glass and chances are you'll hear "a church." But stained glass can be utilized in areas all around the home, including lamps, windows, mosaics, cabinets, hutches and doors. To be broader, stained glass can be added to virtually any style of home. "Chico has a lot of Victorian homes, a lot of craftsman homes, a lot of modern homes, ranch style homes," Needham said. "Not only do we do a design for the architectural style, but the client might have a love for an object like a forest, lake, a landscape or some kind of animal theme." The 64-year-old Need- ham opened his down- town studio in 1971 in Chico's Morehead Build- ing. He moved the store to its current location on Broadway in '73, where he's been ever since. "Back then, stained glass wasn't even on the scene very long, only in churches," Needham said. "So it was kind of hard to get people MCT photo The tall crape myrtles and Adirondack chairs are perfect partners in pink. By NORMAN WINTER Sean Murphy Project Home of stained glass as a home addition, (like movies and television) proved to be the perfect vehicle for stained glass. "Stained glass is used as a backdrop. A lot of movies and sit-coms have it and it inspires a lot of people," he said. "It's almost subliminal, but it works." Today Needham and his son, Aaron, continue to pro- vide artistic renditions of landscapes, images, pets and other inspirations for Chico and Northern California homes and businesses, like Sierra Nevada Brewery. Underscoring the value to understand where they could use it in their homes." Ironically, pop culture it's truly a work of art. The business of designing stained glass is always different and Needham never knows what's coming through his front door. "I'm solving a design problem with artwork. That's how I look at most of what I do," Needham said. "As opposed to an artist who makes something and puts it in a gallery and says, 'This is it, take it or leave it,' we try and solve what fits better with the homeowner or church or whomever you're working with. "It's pretty neat, actually," he said. Until next time, Happy home improving. Sean Murphy is a copywriter for Build.com in Chico. Local References (530)366-6033 24 hour service Lic#11003 Certified (MCT) — Over the years I have seen many great gardens but it only takes a minute to recognize a when an artist is the one doing the gardening. They may have the touch of Monet in their plant combinations but it also seems they also have a flair for what I call echoing of colors. Take for instance an historic cottage home in Saturday, April 14, 2012 – Daily News 3B Kosciusko, Miss. The bold gardener chose to paint the wicker furniture on the huge front porch an electric siz- zling lime. This alone might cause palpitations is some gardeners. But the furniture was made all the more beautiful and striking with the addition of a huge bas- ket planted with Dragon Wing red begonias and the dazzling lime green Marguerite sweet potatoes hanging downward echoing the color of the furniture. The color of your home and trim offer some of the best opportunity for echoing colors. In the hot Missis- sippi Delta I had the opportunity to film a home with a lush tropical landscape. While the palms and gingers kept me mesmerized my eyes kept going back to a rather unconventional bottle tree. While many gardeners use the tradition cobalt blue for bottle trees this gardener had chosen colors that echoed or reflect if you like that term better the colors of the teal blue shutters and golden green trim. It was the totality of the partnership immediately reflected that an artist was gardening at this home. Indeed in the rus- tic backyard gazebo were the palettes and paints wait- ing for the next session. Then there was the Louisiana country style cottage. Everywhere I looked was the perfect finishing touch applied by the artist. Underneath a large porch with lime green shutters was a large olive jar maxed out with coleus and the dangling sweet potato. The sweet pota- to echoed the lime green shutters and did the irregular variegation patterns in the coleus. Notice this is second mention of lime green which continues among the trendiest colors in the garden. Blinds Need Blinds?
