Strangely, it happened to him just last season when he was plunked by Brad Lidge to hand the Washington Nationals a victory over the Philadelphia Phillies. ''Been there, done that,'' Gomes quipped. Jonathan Broxton got Gomes this time, hitting him on the first pitch he threw with the bases loaded in the 12th inning and forcing Jemile Weeks home for the winning run in the Oakland Athletics' 5-4 victory over the Kansas City Roy- als on Wednesday. Moments earlier, Broxton (0-1) plunked new A's cleanup hitter Yoenis Cespedes on the first pitch to load the bases and the closer received a mound visit from pitching coach Dave Eiland. ''I wasn't very good today, with the walks and everything else. It started out good but I just did- n't have it,'' Broxton said. ''One was a sinker and one was a four-seam fastball.'' It marked the third time the A's won on a game-ending hit by pitch in Oakland history and first since Olmedo Saenz on July 20, 2002, against Texas. ''You can hit me four times if we win,'' said Gomes, nearly hit earlier on a heater from Kelvin Herrera. ''We have to write that down and keep it in the back of our minds because 98 mph could end your season.'' Coco Crisp's RBI groundout earlier in the 12th tied it at 4 after Billy Butler doubled home the go-ahead run in top half of the inning against Andrew Carignan (1-1). following seven-plus innings, fans got their share of baseball in the finale. A day after rain shortened the Royals' 3-0 win Cespedes already has been hit three times, and his teammates are taking notice. While Cespedes didn't think Broxton intentionally fired at him — ''Everybody could see he was wild'' — he was glad to hear starter Brandon McCarthy had spo- ken up on his behalf and that the pitchers would consider retaliation if it comes to that point. Kansas City heads home for the first time since the start of spring training in mid-February at 3-3, but without the same momentum it would have had with a second winning road series after taking two of three at Los Angeles. Oakland closer Grant Balfour pitched a score- less ninth and 10th. He allowed Alcides Esco- bar's leadoff single in the 10th and a two-out walk to Jeff Francoeur on four pitches before striking out Mike Moustakas. The A's now head out for their first real road MCT photo Oakland Athletics' Jonny Gomes is hit by a pitch from Kansas City Royals' Jonathan Broxton during the 12th inning at O.co Coliseum in Oakland Wednesday. The A's beat the Royals 5-4 in 12 innings. trip — a seven-gamer — considering the two matchups with the Mariners in Tokyo two weeks ago counted as Oakland home games. They get Seattle ace Felix Hernandez for the third time Friday at Safeco Field. Kansas City's Alex Gordon hit a tying home run off Brian Fuentes in the seventh. Jose Mijares hit Josh Reddick with a breaking ball in the right shoulder area leading off the eighth, and the ball ricocheted into Reddick's neck and jaw as he tried to raise his arm to pro- tect himself. He went down for a couple of min- utes before leaving the game. Crisp came in to run and Greg Holland relieved Mijares, but the A's couldn't capitalize. Reddick briefly had spotty vision and was put through concussion tests as a precaution but he expects to play Friday. ''That last inning was kind of weird,'' Reddick put the A's ahead and McCarthy in position for his first victory of the season before Fuentes gave it up. Gomes hit a two-run homer in the fourth to Cespedes doubled, swiped third for his first steal and scored on catcher Brayan Pena's throw- ing error to make it 1-0 in the second. Pena threw wildly into left field trying to get Cespedes at third on his steal. Smith leads Hornets past Kings Giants' catcher NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Jason Smith scored 22 points, hitting 10 of 12 shots, to lead the New Orleans Hornets to a 105-96 victory over the Sacramento Kings on Wednesday night. Marco Belinelli added 21 points and Greivis Vasquez 15 for New Orleans, which shot 55.9 percent (38 of 68) and surged ahead for good with an 18-3 run in the third quarter. Marcus Thornton led all scorers with 25 points and Tyreke Evans added 19 points for the Kings, who have lost six straight. DeMarcus Cousins had early foul trouble and played only 20 minutes, missing nine of his 12 shots. Reserve guard Xavier Henry scored 14 points, while Chris Kaman grabbed 10 rebounds and blocked three shots for the Hornets, who have won two of three. one basket during a span of more than five minutes while the Hornets made their decisive run. 62 lead. New Orleans' lead reached 11 when Vasquez's 3 made it 79-68 late in the period and got as large as 12 early in the fourth quarter when Gustavo Ayon tipped in Carl Landry's missed free throw as he was fouled, then hit his free throw for a three-point play that made it 84-72 Sacramento led 59-53 after Jason Thompson's three-point play on a layup as he was fouled, but then managed only The Kings pulled back as close as 94-90 when Evans' jumper capped an 8-2 spurt, but Vasquez hit a jumper and Belinelli found Kaman cutting to the basket for a layup to give New Orleans enough of a cush- ion to hold on. Thompson scored 18 points Kaman's 15-foot fade started the spurt, during which he added a basket from inside. Vasquez hit a pair of jumpers, Henry converted a steal into a breakaway dunk and Belinel- li hit one of his three 3s as the Hornets built a 71- and Terrence Williams added 16 for the Kings, who shot 43.4 percent and were hurt by miss- ing 15 of 22 shots they attempt- ed from 3-point range. Notes: Hornets G Jerome Dyson made his debut, one day after being signed to a 10-day contract. The rookie out of Connecticut was the 21st play- er to appear in a game for the injury-riddled Hornets this sea- son. He had 3 points, 5 assists, 3 rebounds and a steal in 23- plus minutes. .... Hornets G Eric Gordon missed his second straight game with a back injury that forced him out of last Saturday's victory over Minnesota. ... Thornton scored 20 or more in three of his four games against New Orleans this season. ... Cousins, who had seven points, failed to reach double figures in scoring for only 10th time this season. Posey was available to hit, Bochy said. Brought on by the same virus that causes chickenpox, shingles is a blistering skin rash most common in older people. It usually ends after four weeks, but one in five victims develop long-term nerve pain. Other complications include scarring and loss of vision or hearing. Tony La Russa was treated for shingles, which left his face swollen and his right eye nearly shut. Bochy said Posey was on medication, another reason he didn't want to put him behind the plate Wednesday night. Last season, former Cardinals manager Flyers rally to beat Penguins 4-3 in overtime Jakub Voracek has no idea how good the Philadelphia Flyers could be if they played 60 full minutes, or beyond. PITTSBURGH (AP) — Follow us on Twitter: @TehamaSports At the moment, it's hard- ly necessary. Voracek beat Marc- Andre Fleury from in close 2:23 into overtime to give the Flyers a 4-3 comeback victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Wednesday night in Game 1 of the East- ern Conference quarterfinal series. '''It was a lucky bounce for me but I'll take it,'' Voracek said after scoring his first career playoff goal. So will the Flyers, who hardly panic when things don't go their way early. Philadelphia led the NHL with 20 victories when the opponent jumps in front. Pittsburgh did that with ease. The Penguins scored the first three goals, all in the first period. No matter. Game 2 is Friday night Briere missed the final week of the regular season after taking a hard hit from Pittsburgh's Joe Vitale dur- ing Philadelphia's 6-4 win at Consol Energy Center on April 1. Red Wings NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Gabriel Bourque scored two goals in his post- season debut, and the Nashville Predators held Predators beat first postseason goal, and Pekka Rinne made 35 saves. The Predators started at home after edging Detroit for the No. 4 seed, and they started their third postsea- son series against their Cen- tral Division rival with their first win in the opening game. Game 2 is Friday night in Nashville. Paul Gaustad scored his Tomas Holmstrom scored power-play goals for Detroit. The Red Wings Henrik Zetterberg and lost center Darren Helm to an upper-body injury in the first period. Nashville gave Detroit 44 seconds of a 5-on-3 when Ryan Suter was called for slashing at with 3:52 to go. The Predators killed off the 5-on-3, but Holmstrom scored with 2:07 left to give Detroit a chance. Manager Bruce Bochy said Posey con- tracted a painful rash Sunday night under his left armpit, on his left side and his back. The 2010 NL Rookie of the Year was removed from the lineup for Wednes- day night's game at Colorado, with back- up Hector Sanchez getting his second straight start. ''It's been getting better every day. If we were in September he could go out there and play but with the day game tomorrow I thought let Hector have this evening and let him play tomorrow,'' Bochy said. ''With the shingles I don't know if he could go both games. I guess it's quite painful and I changed the line- up.'' After Holmstrom's goal, Nashville took its timeout while Detroit coach Mike Babcock pulled Jimmy Howard for the extra attacker. With 22.9 seconds left, Martin Erat went to the box for holding, but the Predators sealed up the vic- tory.
