Tuesday, April 10, 2012 – Daily News 7A Archery interest rises as fans follow heroine MCT photo target 20 yards away. Body straight, shoulders down, settling into her stance. Focused. She pulls back on the custom string of her Hoyt Tobi Rogers demonstrates her archery skills. She is practicing for the National Field Archery Association Indoor Nationals. KANSAS CITY, Mo. And her arrow hits home. equipment have increased more than 20 percent in the last year, according to the Archery Trade Asso- ciation, and attendance continues to rise at its annu- al trade show. And archery is expected to get more attention than ever at the Summer Olympics in Lon- don. "Shooting indoors is a mind game," says Tobi Rogers, 42, a former national archery champion who holds state records in Missouri and New Jersey and a full quiver of regional titles as well. "The more that you can shoot over and over like a robot, the better off you are. If you can keep your mind quiet, concentrate on your shot sequence and ham- mer in the center, then you're good to go." If only she could do it full time. "I live for bow string with their fingers. In recent years she has been competing as a professional in freestyle unlim- ited, in which archers use a "release aid" to trigger the bow string. She acknowledges that the equipment can be archery," Rogers says. "I was born an archer. I only work in accounting because I've got to make a liv- ing." Now more and more people are sharing her pas- sion, perhaps thanks in large part to a phenomenon known as "The Hunger Games." In the novel- turned-movie blockbuster, heroine Katniss Everdeen relies on her mad bow-and-arrow skills to survive in a deadly televised reality competition of a dystopian future. Since the book trilogy debuted in 2008, some 36.5 million copies are now in print — a 55 percent jump this year alone, according to publisher Scholastic. The new film, which grossed about $200 million in the U.S. in its first week, makes archery look cool, with long, loving close-ups of its star, Jennifer Lawrence, pulling back her bow string with a steely glare. Rogers, who lives in Kansas City, Mo., is the sec- retary of Independence Bow Hunters, which, since 1964, has promoted competitive target archery and hunting. It operates an indoor range in Raytown and an outdoor range in Blue Springs, Mo. She says she has seen more women and children taking up archery in the last couple of years, espe- cially in bow hunting. They like the independence of this individual sport, and they're finding archery to be accessible regardless of age or physical abili- ty. "We've got people who shoot with their teeth, with mechanisms off of their shoulders, and we've got one guy in Iowa who shoots with his feet," Rogers says. "It's a sport that anyone can do." Rogers says she took up archery 35 years ago because she was inspired by her late grandmother, Millie Foster, an archery champion and popular teacher. expensive and should be fitted to your size and age. Rogers estimates that she spends more than $2,000 in equipment each year, plus fees and travel expens- es for competitions, though she does get sponsor- ships from her grandfather's store and from Carter Enterprises, which sells archery equipment. Still, people should give it a try, she says: "I encourage people who are interested in archery to find me at archery tournaments, or to see me on the range." "Taking care of other archers was embedded in my brain for so many years by my grandmother. I'm just a smaller version of her: She was more than 6 feet tall, and I'm only 5 feet 2." 530 528-2723Tues.-Fri. 10:30-5:30 650 Main St., Red Bluff Sat. 11-3 • Closed Sun. & Mon.
