There is no doubt in my mind that I could easily and happily eat my way through life. Oh the images that dance through my head; plates of pasta, mounds of deli meat on a sandwich roll, burrito bowls from Chipotle, but I digress. My mind is often at battle with my will to make good choices. I know right from wrong, good from bad and it is often in weakness that I choose the very thing I don't want to do in spite of my best intentions. There are times, glorious and fulfilling, when the choices are the right ones and I feel empowered and in control. The key to success isn't about mak- ing the choice; it's about the feelings associated with the choice. When you make the choice to do what is right, in your best interest or what is necessary, do you feel punished or powerful? This mindset will determine your overall success. The feelings your choices generate in your soul will determine your mettle. Do you feel punished or powerful? When you take charge of life, do you do it kicking and scream- ing like a toddler's tantrum, forced into the corner by your own authority? Do you make the right choice and seethe with resentment? Do you feel punished by not getting the 3000 calorie meal and forced to eat the better selection? Do you feel punished when you are not allowed to manipulate others emotionally with your flare ups, inconsistent moods and attitudes even though you feel they are justified? Do you want to scream when you have to expel energy in the form of exercise as though you are being water boarded? People who fail at life see sacrifice or change as punishment. They are pissed off that they must endure good choices to have things they feel should just happen for them. They tantrum internally and externally with people who don't support their poor me atti- tude. People who succeed at life see that there is power in the choosing. Faydra Rector You Matter change their life perspective. Choose to be powerful. There is power in conquering a demon behavior. There is power in seeing sacrifice as a badge of honor, not a badge of shame. There is power in believing that doing with- out something or working hard is equated to success, not deprivation. It is never too late to change your mindset. You can turn around your thoughts about sacrifice and hard work. If you love someone who is negative, you must not allow them to affect your happiness. I promise you no amount of co-dependent love will Faydra Rector, MA is a mental health administrator, author, public speaker, educator and life coach who lives in Red Bluff.
