MARKZALESKI—THEASSOCIATEDPRESS Oakland Raiders head coach Jack Del Rio argues a call with field judge Dyrol Prioleau (109) in the second half of an NFL football game against the Tennessee Titans Sunday in Nashville, Tenn. ByJerryMcDonald BayAreaNewsGroup ALAMEDA Jack Del Rio didn't see the point in talk- ing about his good fortune Monday given the chal- lenging road ahead. While Tennessee Titans coach Mike Mularkey was spending part of his me- dia briefing revealing that the NFL had conceded that his team was the victim of a "poorly officiated play" Sunday that led to a 24-21 win by the Raiders, Del Rio adhered to league policy. "We try to keep in- house out of respect for the guys and the job that they do," Del Rio said. "There are a lot of oppor- tunities in the game for different calls to go dif- ferent ways. I'm just not going to get into that." Del Rio is the coach of 5-6 team that remains in playoff contention. Mular- key, an interim coach of a 2-9 team, risked a fine for being specific about re- ports that are supposed to be confidential and are a weekly part of the review process. With the Kansas City Chiefs up next for the Raiders, and with four of their final five opponents currently holding playoff seeds, the holding call by B.W. Webb against Amari Cooper that allowed Derek Carr's 12-yard game-win- ning touchdown pass to Seth Roberts was yester- day's news. With Denver well atop the AFC West at 9-2, Del Rio appeared willing to concede the division title was out of reach, but lit- tle else. "Everything we'd like to accomplish, for the most part, is in front of us," Del Rio said. "Five big games left. An opportunity to play our best football down the stretch, and we're going to need it because we have a heck of a challenge in front of us, starting with the Chiefs." Born in Philadelphia, Bryant spent much of his childhood living in Italy where his father, Joe Bry- ant, played pro basketball for several years. When his family moved back to the United States, Bry- ant went to Lower Merion High School, located in an affluent suburb about nine miles west of downtown Philadelphia. He once said early in his career that he wasn't from Philly because he didn't live within the city limits. That didn't sit well with lo- cal fans. "He was a spoiled rich kid who grew up in a fancy suburb," said Louis Manitti, a former season ticketholder. "He was never one of us. He wasn't a hard- working blue-collar guy." Local media were critical whenBryantdecidedtoskip collegeandturnproin1996. The Sixers had the first pick that year and chose Allen Iverson. Bryant went 13th to Charlotte, which traded him to Los Angeles. Bry- ant's dad played four sea- sons with the Sixers, but he declared he grew up root- ingfortheLakers.Ofcourse, Sixersfansdidn'tappreciate that slight. But nothing turned fans against Bryant more than a bold statement he made during the 2001 NBA Fi- nals when the Lakers played Philadelphia. Iver- son led the Sixers to a vic- tory on the road in Game 1 and the Lakers won Game 2. Afterward, Bryant said he wanted to come home and "cut their hearts out" by winning the series in Philadelphia. The Lak- ers did just that, winning three straight games to clinch the NBA champion- ship. "I liked Kobe until he said he wanted to rip our hearts out," said Michael Rivers, a part-time sea- son ticketholder. "He was too cocky, too arrogant and that was too personal. Just say you want to win and that's enough." Bryant has never apolo- gized for that comment. "I'm not apologizing for saying I'm going to come kick some (butt)," Bry- ant told reporters before a game in Philadelphia in 2012. "I'm just not go- ing to do it. But I certainly embrace the city and I love everything that it's taught me. So, I'm deeply appre- ciative of it." Kobe FROM PAGE 1 fracture in his left foot, and his status remains day-to- day while the 49ers gauge his progress. "Other teams didn't give me this shot, but the 49ers did and I was definitely go- ing to take it and run like a wild man when I got the chance," Draughn said af- ter Sunday's 19-13 loss to the Arizona Cardinals. Draughn's workload last game went beyond his 15 carries for 51 yards and five catches for 35 yards. His pass protection didn't go unnoticed by those who appreciated it most. "He just sticks his face up in there," Tiller said. "He doesn't care whose blitzing. He's going to stick his hat in there and pick up that block." Such reliability as a blocker — and an all- around experience — is what the 49ers hoped they were getting when they signed Draughn rather than recall Australian rookie Jarryd Hayne from the practice squad. Pierre Thomas got signed a day after Draughn but didn't last a week. Cadet, another veteran, hasn't touched the ball in two games. "Coming up, teams sta- pled me as a third-down back, not an every-down back," Draughn said. "But (running backs coach) Tom Rathman has played this game and he is coach- ing me up to do all I can do." Upon hearing Monday that Draughn is on his eighth team, Tiller reacted with surprise, then added: "That's their loss." Notes • Tomsula praised Quinton Dial's pass-rush- ing form rather than rip the officials for Sunday's roughing penalty on Car- son Palmer, which fac- tored into the Cardinals' winning drive. Dial appeared to sack Palmer for an 8-yard loss at the Cardinals' 24-yard line with 6:39 remaining. 49ers FROM PAGE 1 start since Nov. 1 after missing two games with injured ribs. Also, Browns cornerback Justin Gilbert will make his first start this sea- son in place of Pierre De- sir. Gilbert has been a ma- jor disappointment for the Browns, who selected him with the No. 8 overall pick in 2014. The Ravens can't go a week without more inju- ries. They're missing two more offensive starters as left tackle Eugene Monroe and left guard Kelechi Os- emele are both out with injuries. James Hurst will replace Monroe and Ryan Jensen fills in for Osemele. Baltimore is already missing starting quarter- back Joe Flacco (knee) and running back Justin Forsett (broken arm). Both sustained season-ending injuries last week against St. Louis. Cleveland's offensive line will be missing starting left guard Joel Bitonio, who will sit out his second straight game with an injured an- kle. RookieCamErvingwill make his second start. The Browns remain without star cornerback Joe Haden as well as wide receivers Taylor Gabriel and Andrew Hawkins. They all have concussions.
