The Associated Press LOSANGELES More than 130 families have been temporarily relocated from a Los Angeles neigh- borhood due to a leak at a massive natural gas stor- age facility that's causing a sickening stench. SoCalGas officials had received 503 inquiries as of Wednesday night from residents seeking reloca- tion, The Los Angeles Daily News reported. Nearly 250 wouldn't ac- cept the offered accommo- dations and opted to find housing on their own, So- Cal Gas spokesman Javier Mendoza said. More than 650 Porter Ranch residents have com- plained about the rotten- egg smell, nausea, head- aches and dizziness since the leak was discovered in late October. SoCalGas officials have said they planned to use a mist to mask the stench as work continues for possi- bly three more months to plug the well. City and county offi- cials have called on the state to help control the leak. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health ordered SoCalGas to provide free, tempo- rary relocation assistance at San Fernando Valley ho- tels. The company is also providing mileage and food reimbursements for those who have left their homes. SoCalGas has 115 wells at the site that pump nat- ural gas into an empty, un- derground oil field and is believed to be the largest natural gas storage facility in the West. It is capable of supplying all of Southern California for more than a month. Company and public of- ficials have said the field is not at risk of exploding and the natural gas does not pose any health prob- lems. STENCH More than 130 Los An ge le s fa mi li es relocated due to gas leak By Olga R. Rodriguez The Associated Press SAN FRANCISCO Federal officials say a business is recalling a vegetable mix believed to be the source of E.coli in Costco chicken salad that has been linked to an outbreak that has sickened 19 people in seven states. Taylor Farms Pacific Inc. of Tracy, Califor- nia, has recalled a mix of diced celery and onion used in Costco chicken salad and other foods containing celery "out of an abundance of cau- tion," the Food and Drug Administration said in a statement Thursday. The foods range from Thai-style salads to pack- aged dinners and wraps, and they are sold at Costco, Target, Starbucks and many other outlets, the FDA said. Costco says it uses one supplier for those vegeta- bles in the chicken salad sold in all its U.S. stores. A message left Thursday with Taylor Farms was not immediately returned. Costco, based in Is- saquah, Washington, pulled the chicken salad off store shelves nationwide, posted signs in its stores and provided detailed pur- chase logs to the U.S. Cen- ters for Disease Control and Prevention to help it track who bought the prod- uct and where the salad in- gredients came from. Six people got sick in Montana, five in Utah, four in Colorado, and one each in California, Mis- souri, Virginia and Wash- ington state. The illness re- ports began on Oct. 6 and involved people from age 5 to 84, the CDC said. Health officials urged people who bought chicken salad at any U.S. Costco store on or before Nov. 20 to throw it away, even if no one has gotten sick. The strain of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli can be life-threatening, but no deaths have been reported. Five people have been hos- pitalized, including two with kidney failure. Symptoms of E. coli in- fection include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, nau- sea and vomiting. The in- cubation period is three to seven days from the time of exposure. The number of peo- ple sickened in the out- break will likely grow over the next few weeks, even though the product has been removed from store shelves, the CDC said Wednesday. Health officials urge any- one with the symptoms, es- pecially people who have eaten Costco chicken salad, to go to their doctor.
