Epsilon Beta Chapter 6 L ast semester was a wonderful time to be at Epsilon Beta. This fall, our sisters continued aspiring to achieve in high academics, leadership on campus, community involvement, and enjoy- ing our precious and few college years. RECRUITING NEW KAPPAS Epsilon Beta engaged in informal recruitment last spring with events including an open house, where interested women could come and talk with active members about what the membership experience is like and the values that set our organization apart, a guided painting event for day two at a local venue in Old Town, and at the end of it all, our chapter was thrilled to invite 12 enthusiastic women to join our sisterhood. To read more about our fall recruitment efforts, please see the article on page 7. STAYING FOCUSED ON ACADEMICS Academically, Epsilon Beta continues to be a leader on campus and in the Greek community. Our chapter achieved a 3.18 GPA, placing us above the all-Panhellenic sorority and the all-women's GPA. Our chapter also has one of the highest number of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics majors among the eight sororities on campus. With more members each year pursuing the most challenging programs, our chapter is continually working to find the best ways to support our members academically. To make studying a little more fun, our chapter hosts events such as our beginning of the semester syllabus party, where women bring their class materials and syllabi to transfer into their calendars and prepare for a semester of success. GREEK WEEK CHAMPIONS For Greek Week this past spring, the theme was "Battle for Best Picture" and each team was given a classic movie for the theme of various dances, recreational sports competitions, and on-campus challenges to engage with other members of the fraternity and sorority community at CSU. Kappa was paired with Phi Delta Theta, Alpha Sigma Phi, and Alpha Gamma Omega with the movie Caddyshack. The chapter had so much fun performing and showing how strong the Greek community is and we took home first place. PHILANTHROPIC SUPPORT Our chapter is active in philanthropy and commu- nity involvement. Epsilon Beta hosted our annual Kappa Klassic golf tournament supporting Read- ing Is Fundamental through book donations and golf team registration. In addition, we partnered with the newest sorority on campus, Kappa Alpha Theta, to host the Keys and Kites breakfast, ben- efitting both Reading is Fundamental and CASA for Children. A full breakfast buffet was served, prizes were donated for a raffle, and the Kappa Pickers performed several songs, making it an engaging experience for all in attendance. With Theta re-established on CSU's campus last fall, it was a joy getting to welcome them back with this fun and successful event. The sisters of Epsilon Beta could not be more proud of our chapter's recent accomplishments, and the feeling of warmth in the house is infectious. Moving forward, we can't wait to see what the future holds. We hope you'll stop by the chapter house to see us soon! Loyally, Cayla Cappello '13 Chapter President ebkappapresident@gmail.com A Successful Fall for Kappa Epsilon Beta Excels in Academics, Philanthropy, and Greek Week Epsilon Beta celebrates Bid Day and our 63 new sisters joining Kappa Kappa Gamma. K appa Kappa Gamma has long been protective of its symbols and memorabilia, especially our beautiful golden Kappa keys. As online bidding sites became more popular, our badges' uniqueness has made them valuable collector items. Ten years ago, a group of collegiate and alumnae members formed the "Keepers of the Key." These Keepers are dedicated to ensuring that our fraternity badges stay in the hands of our sisters whenever possible, rather than unaffiliated collectors. Our story begins in 1979 when Epsilon Beta alumna, Tschudy Griffith Schmidt '65, was in attendance at our National Convention in Columbus, Ohio. At that time, Tschudy was an active member of EB's delegation. Tschudy's commitment to Kappa is legendary. She held almost every Advisory Board position at Epsilon Beta, was EB's House Board President, was a Province Director of Alumnae, and then a Regional Director of Alumnae. As a Kappa legacy, her roots run as deep as her service. She is a true blue and blue Kappa! You can imagine her distress and frustration when, during the Convention's hustle and bustle, she somehow lost her sapphire and pearl key. The entire EB delegation hunted and searched, but Tschudy returned to Colorado keyless. Tschudy's mother, a member of Beta Mu chapter, understood her distress and bought her a replacement badge that she has worn ever since. However, Tschudy always missed the original key she received in 1965. Tschudy will celebrate an important milestone in 2015 when she will proudly receive her 50-year pin from Kappa. How ironic then that Tschudy received a phone call from Mary Silzel, one of the dedicated "Keepers of the Key," this July —Tschudy's lost key had been found! Mary had adroitly purchased a key on e-Bay in July, and upon receipt saw that it had Tschudy's name and initiation date on the back. Tschudy was happy to reimburse the "Keepers of the Key" and was reunited with her badge after a thirty-six year separation! The thirty-six year journey of Tschudy's badge adds an interesting dimension to the story. Apparently, a vacuum at the Convention 1979 hotel did not swallow up her key as Tschudy had always imagined. Somehow it ended up in a Columbus, Ohio, antique shop. 50-Year Pin Unlocks the Key to a Mystery e Story of an Epsilon Beta badge's 36-Year Journey (Continued on page 8)
