2 THELAMBDA LETTER A Few Are Honored by It Jay Beattey '81 Nominated to the Order of Constantine F or Jay Beattey '81, Sigma Chi is much more than a Fraternity; it is a family tradition. His grandfather, father, brother, and two of his cousins are members. Several of them have served in positions such as grand praetor and grand consul, and have been honored with awards such as the Hoosier Sig of the Year. It comes as no surprise that Jay inherited this dedication to the Fraternity and, as a result, was nominated to the Order of Constantine. Since Jay joined Lambda Chapter, he has seen the values and experiences influence his life. "Sigma Chi shaped everything about me. It has been my guidepost. I'm absolutely certain I would not be the son, father, brother, husband, business person, or spiritual person I am were it not for Sigma Chi." When Jay was nominated to the Order of Constantine, he was surprised and honored. "Knowing that five alumni nominated me is very humbling." He knows several Constantine Sigs and feels very privileged to be a member of the most exclusive contingent of Sigma Chi. "I don't think I've given or accomplished a fraction of what others have, but most other Constantine Sigs would say the same thing. No one truly earns this—but a few are honored by it." Jay has made being involved with and giving back to Sigma Chi a priority since becoming an alumnus. He's served on the Lambda House Corporation Board, as Lambda's chapter advisor, and has been a member of the Indianapolis Alumni Chapter for 35 years. He has made sure to dedicate his time, experience, and money. "I invest my time in Sigma Chi because it is the best institution I know of to shape and reveal the character of young men at a critical time in their lives. I dedicate my experience because the undergraduates listen and learn from it. I contribute because there is no tradition, no Fraternity house, no recruiting advantage unless we as alumni ensure that Sigma Chis have the best place to live and the best environment to live in." Jay is the CEO and president of WealthSmart America, an insurance and financial services organization. He and his wife, Julie, live in Fishers, Indiana, and have two daughters: Jessica and Jackie. Jay remains in contact with many of his Sigma Chi brothers, playing golf and attending alumni events. You can contact Jay at beattey4@yahoo.com. LIVING SIGMA CHI VALUES EVERYDAY Phil Chambers '80 Honored with Significant Sig Award T he bond of Sigma Chi and the values gained there last not only four years, but for a lifetime. For Phil Chambers '80, those values have become his guiding principles. His Fraternity membership has come to shape the person he is, both personally and professionally, which is why he was honored with the Significant Sig Award. Phil was first introduced to Sigma Chi through his father, William Chambers '54. He became familiar with the Jordan Standard and what the Fraternity stood for at a very young age. When his brothers attended Indiana University, they joined the Fraternity. It was only natural that he joined Lambda Chapter when he got to college. "It was a continuation of a tradition for our family." That tradition has continued with his sons, David Chambers '10 and Brandon Chambers '13, and his nephew, Nicholas Chambers, Beta Chi '15. "I try to follow and live the Jordan Standard every day," Phil shares. "I would not have been successful in anything had it not been for Sigma Chi and the values I learned." Those values have translated into the business environment, helping him create a company that is built upon a foundation of trust, honesty, and reliability. When he was nominated for the Significant Sig Award, Phil was surprised and honored. "It's a special event when your Fraternity, a brotherhood that is so important to you, recognizes you for your success as a business person." Since graduation, Phil has remained involved with Lambda Chapter, most recently in the position of chapter advisor. "My favorite part is having the opportunity to mentor the undergraduate members. I enjoy mentoring young people, especially when it pertains to Sigma Chi values and living those values." He hopes that other alumni will become more involved in the Chapter. "The guys need positive role models and mentors and the more we can get involved, the stronger Lambda Chapter and Sigma Chi as a whole will be." Phil is CEO and president of the Townsend Corporation, a utility services company that provides contracting services for utilities around the U.S. He and his wife, Karen, live in Indianapolis, Indiana. You can contact Phillip at pchambers@thetownsendcorp.com.
