O n August 8, Indianapolis lost not only a great man, but a great Sigma Chi. Don W. Goelzer '50 entered Chapter Eternal at the age of 86, surrounded by his family. Throughout his life, he remained a loyal alumnus of the Fraternity and Lambda Chapter, making a positive impact on those around him. "My father truly practiced the character qualities embodied within Sigma Chi," shares Don's son, Gregory W. Goelzer '81. Don's commitment to the values of Sigma Chi is evident throughout his personal and professional life. Don, after 19 years with City Securities, founded Goelzer & Co. Inc. in 1969 on those same guiding principles. "His vision was to build a business based on his personal character traits that he so fully embraced and lived—trust, integrity, and commitment. Today, 46 years later, the legacy that he envisioned is present in Goelzer Investment Management, an Indianapolis based portfolio management and investment advisory firm." Throughout his community and the Fraternity, Don had a positive influence. Over the years, he remained actively involved with Sigma Chi at a local and national level, served as chairman of the Investment Committee of the Indiana University Alumni Association, and was an executive council member of the Indiana University School of Business and the School of Business Alumni Association. He was honored with the Significant Sig Award, the Indiana University Alumni Association President's Award, and the Z.G. Clevenger Award. As Greg grew up, Don shared with him stories and lessons from his time in Lambda Chapter; stories and lessons that led Greg to follow in his father's footsteps. Greg enjoyed being able to share in the bond of Sigma Chi with his father. "It's one thing to be a father and son, but it's unique to be brothers as well." Whenever Greg and Don shook hands, they embraced the Sigma Chi handshake. It is a bond and tradition that Greg carried on with his son, Gregory (Will) W. Goelzer Jr. '15. "Only a few can appreciate the experience of having three generations of Lambda Sigma Chis." One of their favorite memories with Don was the three of them being present for Will's initiation. Greg was honored by the number of Sigma Chi brothers who came to Don's service and was proud to be a part of the Sigma Chi White Rose Ceremony. "It was a powerful glimpse for everyone into the meaningful words of Sigma Chi, showing the emotional importance of the bond of our brotherhood." For Greg, and certainly for Don too, brotherhood may have begun at initiation, but the journey of brotherhood continues throughout a lifetime. You can connect with Greg at ggoelzer@goelzerinc.com.
