O n August 29, Delta Gammas met to dedicate the newly constructed Alpha Upsilon chapter house on the SMU campus. Although the house was not completely finished or furnished, attendees were able to appreciate the Georgian architecture, the grand interior spaces, and the stunning formal design of the entry, with its marble floors and beautiful chandelier. The formal rooms feature tall ceilings and beautiful, fresh, inviting colors. There are subtle hints of Delta Gamma throughout the house, from the DG crest, which is carved into the wood mantle in the living room, to the anchors, which are part of the beamed ceiling of the dining room. The patio with donor names engraved on the bricks can be seen from the dining room, which is large enough to accommodate the entire chapter for Monday night dinners. On the day of the dedication, Dixie Sage Oneacre, Gamma Rho '64 welcomed Delta Gammas and their families from the front porch of the new house. Dixie thanked members of the Alpha Upsilon Housing Corporation for their diligent work on the construction project, with special thanks to Anne Fletcher Conwell '77, Natalie Baum Davis '90 and Debbie Lee Grayson '88. Dixie also recognized Susan Hall Farris '72 and Carol Duncan '76, the capital campaign co- chairs, and presented them with Waterford anchor paperweights as a gift of appreciation for their months of hard work and dedication. Carol Duncan '76 thanked donors who have pledged nearly $2,400,000 to the capital campaign for the new house. She noted that the era leaders, decade leaders, and pledge class leaders were vital to the success of the campaign. She also thanked the Alpha Upsilon Chapter for their financial support and perseverance through the 2014-15 school year. During the construction year, the chapter made their temporary home across the street from 3120 Daniel Avenue, and it's certain the the women of Alpha Upsilon were looking forward to moving into their new home. Susan Hall Farris '72 spoke to the audience about the Ludi Mai Sensabaugh Goode '32 memorial staircase and stated that more than 100 DGs from the '60s and '70s donated to this special memorial in honor of Mrs. Goode. Ludi Mai always wanted Delta Gamma to have a grand staircase, and when the entry is completed, Ludi Mai's portrait and a plaque listing the staircase donors will be hung in her honor. Susan introduced John and Doris Goode, Ludi Mai's son and daughter-in-law, and Jade Foster, Ludi Mai's great-granddaughter, who made the trip to SMU to honor Ludi Mai. SMU President, Gerald Turner, spoke about Delta Gamma's tradition of doing good at SMU since the chapter's founding in 1926. Dr. Turner commended collegiate chapter members for their dedication to philanthropy and their support of the Delta Gamma Lectureship, which is an annual event on campus. He recalled the role of Judge Sarah T. Hughes in the founding of the Alpha Upsilon Chapter so many years ago. Dr. Turner also noted that more than 3,000 women have been initiated into Delta Gamma at SMU. Hayley Young '13, Alpha Upsilon president, thanked donors and the Housing Corporation for all that they have done to create such a beautiful home for the chapter. Dr. Turner, along with Dixie, Carol, Susan, and Hayley, cut the pink ribbon and invited guests into the new house for tours and a lovely brunch organized by Dawn Lee Smith '87. The dedication was bursting with DG pride and sheer excitement for the unveiling of the new Alpha Upsilon chapter house. All of those in attendance truly made it a special day for DG SMU.
