It was a beautiful fall day with lots of sunshine and blue Texas skies. Homecoming this year coincided with the centennial celebration of the founding of SMU. Local DGs and Alpha Upsilons from across the US and Canada stopped by the chapter house that morning for a fabulous brunch prepared by Chef Craig Gibson. Collegians offered tours of the new house, which received rave reviews from all. Recently elected AY Housing Corporation president, Amy Lisle Albrecht '74, greeted visitors and invited them to sign the chapter's guest book. Carmela Martini '77 and Elizabeth LeBlanc Gray '77 made their second trip to SMU this fall, having attended the dedication in August and returning to see the completed house in September. Nancy Boughner Shaw '68 and her pledge sister Mary Reese Abney '68 enjoyed touring the house and seeing their composites in the upstairs hallway. Jeannine Frazier Nieman '46 and her daughter Linda Nieman Casto '79 were spotted taking selfies in front of their family's donor plaque. Thanks for your support ladies! Both Marilyn Mock Duncan '51 and her daughter Carol Duncan '76 were in attendance. Carol and Susan Hall Farris '72 chaired the very successful capital campaign. Lu Hudson Tompson '56 and her husband Willard enjoyed the brunch, and Willard presented the chapter with a vase created from the old pecan tree, which was removed to make way for the new house. It was great to see journalist Rebecca Sherman '78 and her sister Robin Sherman Brown '78; both donated to the campaign in memory of their mom, a DG from Alpha Omega, Arkansas. Carol Jamison Egan '78 shared the news that her daughter Erin joined her sister Lauren as a new member at the USC Delta Gamma chapter. The pledge class of '69 was well represented by Ann Strausbaugh O'Boyle '69, Mary Lee Filgo Miller '69, and Mary Ann Portman Schwab '69. Paige Cole Hyatt '82, a member of the capital campaign committee, also dropped by to see the new house. Also in attendance were Carolyn Jensen Bender '78 and Betsy Weber Hurst '76. Many other alumnae and recent graduates enjoyed the house tour, followed by the traditional Homecoming parade and tailgating before the football game. It would be difficult to choose a part of the house that is most impressive. The expansive front porch offers a wonderful view of the campus. The entry with its marble floors, curved staircase, and crystal chandelier are breathtaking. The soft colors of the living room and the TV room are so inviting, and the vast dining room offers much-needed space for the large active chapter. The resident kitchen (formerly the mini-kitchen in the old house) has a built-in serving area, and the large, well-equipped commercial kitchen has made the chef and his helpers very happy. The new house director has a spacious apartment, and there is a guest room for visitors, along with an elevator to comply with ADA requirements. The second floor features member rooms, a quiet study, and a TV room, plus a large central bathroom and a laundry room. The third floor boasts an art room and a very large chapter room. Thanks to all who purchased the new chapter room chairs! It's a new era for Delta Gamma at SMU, but the chapter is anchored in the traditions that alumnae have created throughout the years. There is a deep feeling of immense gratitude to all who made this Homecoming very special and all who continue to brighten the future for Alpha Upsilon. fr o m A c ross the Country DGs Excited, Proud, and Thankful for the New Alpha Upsilon Chapter House (Left) The completed Alpha Upsilon chapter house radiates with DG pride.
