10A Daily News – Saturday, March 31, 2012 Religion Faith&Worship Church news Sunrise service Sunrise Bible Fellowship will hold its annual namesake Easter Sunrise Service on Shaw Hill at 6:40 a.m. on Sun- day, April 8. Some chairs provided, or bring your own. Follow Plymire Road past the landfill and look for the signs, and the cross on the hill. There will be music and a message given by Josh Carpenter. Following the service there will be a breakfast at the church building at the corner of Cedar and Jackson Streets, from 7-9. Ham, eggs and french toast will be served, with fruit, juice, hot cocoa and coffee. Donations go towards the church's mission trip to India. Easter church service will be at 10 a.m. at the church. Taize ushers in Holy Week Taize Prayer will be offered on Palm Sunday, April 1 from 7-8 p.m. as we begin Holy Week at St. Peter's Epis- copal Church. Voices beautifully fill the candle-lit sanctuary, allowing our hearts to respond to repeated words and phrases that awaken the soul to a deeper sense of Christ's presence. We pray in unity for the healing of others, for our com- munity, our nation, and the world. There is forgiveness and peace in such prayer, and in this peace we find our true home with God. Br. Roger, the founder of the Taize Community in France, believed "God is love alone." Taize Prayer reflects that belief and commitment. Taize Prayer is co-sponsored by the congregations of the Presbyterian Church, Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, St. Peter's Episcopal Church and the Tehama County United Methodist Churches. Those from all faith backgrounds are welcome to attend. More detailed infor- mation about the Taize Community and Taize Prayer can be found at www.taize.fr. St. Peter's, 510 Jefferson St., is on the corner of Jeffer- son and Elm, in Red Bluff. For more information contact 527-5205 or stpeters@sbcglobal.net. Visit the website at saintpetersepiscopal.org. St. Peter's celebrates our unity in Christ while honoring our differences, always putting the work of love before uniformity of opinion. St. Peter's Holy Week St. Peter's Episcopal Church is offering Holy Week ser- vices beginning on Palm Sunday, April 1 and concluding with a traditional Easter Service on Sunday, April 8. The week will begin in the Parish Hall as congregation members, waving palm branches, process to the sanctuary for the Palm Sunday Service at 9:30 a.m. on April 1. A 10 a.m. Holy Eucharist and Healing Service on Wednesday, April 4, will include Stations of the Cross. The monthly Morning Prayer Service at 9 a.m. will be offered on Thurs- day, April 5. On April 5, a Maundy Thursday Service will include a tradition foot washing and the stripping of the altar. On Good Friday, April 6, the Sanctuary will be open for self- led prayer and meditation from noon-3 p.m. The Great Easter Vigil will be offered on Saturday, April 7, at 7 p.m. Holy Eucharist and flowering of the Cross will conclude the Holy Week progression on Easter Sunday, April 8, at 9:30 a.m. All are welcome to attend any of the Holy Week ser- vices at St. Peter's, 510 Jefferson St., on the corner of Jef- ferson and Elm, in Red Bluff. The Emmaus Revelation Easter is on the way and there is no fuller revelation of the Lord our God than the revelation of His Son in the death and resurrection – for Him and for us – in the Cross of Calvary. I am fortunate enough to be one who recalls the date and time of my first meeting with Jesus Christ. When asked, by those who think it an important piece of validating information, I can say truthfully, "I first met Jesus in a high school classroom in San Diego, Cali- fornia, at 10:22 a.m. on April 20, 1970." I love to add, "But that is not when I was saved. I was saved at about three in the afternoon two thousand years ago, on a hill just outside of Jerusalem." That is the truth – about God and about me. It is revelation, and it is a living revelation – that which reveals and simultaneously bestows life in terms of itself. Our God is all about revelation to a degree we seldom notice. Every act He performs in Scripture is for the prima- ry purpose of His self revelation. Jesus always includes the disciples – some or all – when He acts for His Father and the Kingdom. Paul makes a point of saying none of this was done in a corner and Jesus rebukes his friends for hiding their light under a basket. In the book of Ezekiel alone God tells the prophet more than sixty times that He does and says what He does and says so that "they" will know that He is the sovereign Lord. Even the Creation that unfolds in Genesis is depicted from the point of view of an earthbound observ- er – this explains the apparently mis- placed order of creation that is exactly as it would unfold to such an observer. And among Jesus' last earthly words A VITAL PRACTICE Pastor Emeritus Ray- mond Davis Jr., Greater Corinthian Church of the Christ, Kansas City, Mo.: Pilgrimages are holy ritual practices for many reli- gions. Traditionally, these pilgrimages are journeys to sacred places giving devo- tion to icons or deceased persons of sainthood. The religion of Islam is most notable of all pilgrim- ages as people of that faith journey to the sacred place of Mecca. It's common knowledge among Muslims that at least once in their life, all that are able to do so must make this pilgrimage. In Christian history, to His disciples in Luke 24 are these: You are witnesses of these things. A witness is a par- ticipant observer in terms of the Greek; it is our par- ticipation in His life that brings us our life. With that in mind take another look at Luke 24. The story of the walk to Emmaus is smack in the middle of the chapter on Jesus' – and our – resurrec- tion. It begins with two dis- ciples on the road to a little town called Emmaus – a suburb of Jerusalem. When Jesus Himself begins to walk with them they do not recognize Him. This is no surprise, inasmuch as they know Him to be dead, but as they talk with the stranger over the seven-mile walk they still do not get a clue as to Who is walking with them. Although He opens their minds and hearts to the scriptures concerning Messiah in such a way that their hearts burn within them, they do not figure out that the man with Whom they have lived the past three years is beside them now. The truth only dawns on them when the living revelation of God manifests before them in the breaking of the bread of Holy Com- munion once they reach Emmaus. This is because the Word of God – as authentic and powerful as that Word written must surely be – is still only the record of the mighty life and activity of the Lord Himself. It comes to life only when it is acted upon by participant observers. When that table of God is Jerusalem has been the object of pilgrimage prac- tices. During the early Mid- dle Ages, Christians made pilgrimages to Jerusalem to pay homage to Christ the Savior. The New Testament mentions an Ethiopian man servant returning from Jerusalem where he went to worship. (Acts 8:26-28) But Christianity goes erected in the presence of His friends and His enemies things hap- pen – life giving things. Until that moment of commitment there is only the hope of life in the record of Life. James Wilson GodTalk On a mission trip to Fiji some years ago I encoun- tered a paralyzed man in a hospital. My faith at the moment was such that I knew that I knew God would not heal the man no matter how fervently I prayed. I knew it in my bones, yet I prayed with an authority I did not feel for the injury process to be reversed in the Name of Jesus. When – 10 minutes later – the man rose from his gurney and walked out of the hospital I heard God laugh- ing uproariously as He said, "I don't care what you know or think. I care only for what you are willing to do in my Name." It is like the paralyzed man in Mark 2 – healed by Jesus – but unable to access his healing until he rises and risks on the promise Jesus makes in words. Then and only then comes the revelation that simultane- ously reveals and bestows life in terms of itself. He is so good – and so committed to our participation in Him we observe. James A. Wilson is the author of Living As Ambassadors of Relationships and The Holy Spirit and the End Times – available at local bookstores or by e-mailing him at praynorthstate@charter.net. Voices of Faith: Which religious pilgrimage is best? A pilgrimage is not only beyond the traditional understanding of pilgrim- age while embracing the traditional pilgrimage. All Christians are pilgrims but embrace a more compre- hensive perspective on pil- grimage. All of the Christ- ian's life on Earth is a pil- grimage in the world through which they pass momentarily. AN INWARD JOURNEY Lama Chuck Stanford, Rime Buddhist Center & Monastery, Kansas City: Nearly all religions place importance on the journey of a pilgrimage. Typically, a pilgrimage is a journey to a shrine or other special place that has special significance to a person's faith and there is almost always some aspect of sacrifice. Obstacles and hardships are to be expected. These difficulties are considered a part of the pilgrimage and for some, a form of purifica- tion. Others believe that the more difficult the pilgrim- Tehama County Church Directory HOYT-COLE CHAPEL OF THE FLOWERS 816 Walnut St. - Red Bluff FD 652 Red Bluff.... It should be a journey of awakening and of transfor- mation.
