The FlaTiron STAYING ACTIVE AS AN ALUMNUS Gert Van Moorsel '82 Shares His Involvement with the Colorado Alpha AVC W hen it comes to the University of Colorado, no Fraternity has a deeper commitment to history and tradition than Sigma Phi Epsilon. For Gert Van Moorsel '82, the quality and diverse membership of Colorado Alpha, coupled with the commitment to tradition, convinced him Sigma Phi Epsilon was the Fraternity for him. From the moment Gert joined, he felt proud to call himself a member of the Fraternity and experience being a part of the Colorado Alpha brotherhood. "Going through the pledge process instilled a real sense of membership, but living in the Chapter House and forming strong bonds with my brothers is what made me want to stay involved," Gert said. He is extremely thankful to have lived in the Chapter House for three years. "I just feel blessed to have been able to do that, to have had the opportunity to enjoy the beauty of the outdoors, in and around Boulder, especially climbing with my Fraternity brothers. It was the complete college experience," Gert said. Not only did Sigma Phi Epsilon help Gert build strong friendships, but it helped him develop as a person. "I think being a SigEp made me a better person overall—socially, physically, and competitively," Gert said, "This in turn, I think, gave me some advantages in opening doors for me." The founding principles of the Fraternity have been a strong motivating force for Gert, which led him to become involved with the Colorado Alpha AVC. He has volunteered with Chapter for about 10 years, serving two of those years as AVC President. "It's really gratifying knowing that you have made a difference in the lives of young men, helping them to carry on the traditions of the Fraternity and being able to express the importance of these values," Gert said. He reminds other alumni that "volunteer time in the service of others is never regrettable, and in a certain way, brings us back to the reasons we joined SigEp in the first place." Along with his involvement volunteering with Colorado Alpha, Gert has remained close to the Chapter through his brothers. "There is a core group of brothers that I consider to be some my best friends to this very day. We have been getting together consistently since graduating, mostly with active outdoor adventures and a standing Super Bowl weekend ski trip," Gert said. "Whenever I run into a Brother there is an instant bond." Gert and his wife, Mindi, have been married for 29 years and have two daughters, Courtney and Christina, as well as two grandchildren. In his free time, he enjoys various outdoor activities such as hiking, biking, skiing, climbing, and kayaking, along with camping in the Colorado mountains and the Utah desert with his family.
