My intention when I joined CHC was never to be president. I wanted to give back to Cal Gamma because it has impacted my life in so many positive ways. I attended the first Pi Phi Alumnae Sleepover about five years ago and put my name on a volunteer list. My pledge sister, Kelly Ryan Wilson '85, and I talked each other into it. As with any new volunteer position, our husbands were less than thrilled. Of course we downplayed our positions and said we wanted to give back to Pi Phi. After all, if it weren't for being Pi Phi sisters, Kelly and I probably wouldn't have met, right? Through our CHC Board, I have met so many amazing women and, although we passed through and made 667 W. 28th Street home at different times—and several women actually pledged, or lived in; the former house as well—it's amazing the similar stories and common bonds we share because of our Pi Beta Phi. I love my Board and the experiences we share. We joke about how when we were collegians, we thought CHC members were there to decorate the house and fix things when they were broken. Oh, how we were wrong!* CHC is a group of women that have 23 children among us, are leaders in other philanthropic organizations in the community, enjoy being with friends and family, and have worked in many fields, including several who have been executives of large corporations. Of course, what binds us is our love of Pi Phi. I am grateful for these amazing ladies who surround me and lift me up with their willingness to serve and their kindness to others. I am still feeling the impact of how Pi Phi is changing my life. Thank you to Robin, Kelly, Sue, Kandi, Maureen, Pam, Jennifer, Jan, Anne, and Laurie. You are all Angels! Wishing you health and happiness and, of course, a winning football season for the Trojans! Pi Phi Love, Susan Brownfield Beall '85 Chapter House Corporation President thebealls@yahoo.com *The website for Pi Beta Phi Fraternity for Women describes a CHC as "a legal entity that owns and manages the chapter's living/ meeting facility and its contents." The CHC board "manages the day-to-day affairs of the corporation and is responsible for all purchasing, building, furnishing, decorating, renovating, and major repairs of chapter property, as well as the employment of staff."
