No more Ms. Nice Coach I have been writing my column for more than two years now giving you tips on how to change your thinking and tools to make your- self more successful in all areas of life; most of the time I have used gen- tle suggestion, nudging and sugar-coated plead- ing to get you to look at the world in a new way. My reference has been that there is no need to beat you over the head with the tactics that are proven to improve your life. My goal has been to awaken your potential. This year, I am changing my strategy. This year, I am challeng- ing you to be, do and have the things that you want by getting up off your butt and doing what it takes to get the job done. No more Ms. Nice Coach. This year, I am going to take a practical and honest approach to giving you tools and tips that suc- cessful people use to be, do and have. For example, if you are struggling with weight, you need to own that you are opening your mouth and putting the food in there. You are making the choices about what you are putting in there. You are the one who is sitting on your butt watching others get a life while you wish you had one. Have you watched the Biggest Loser? Do not tell me that you are too far gone to make change. Do not tell me that it hurts or that you have some asinine injury from your glory days. Make a plan and get the weight off. Making the deci- sion to do it is the hardest step anyway. You do not have to be emotion- ally stable before you can make change. The stability comes while you are in the process of doing the work. You get both for your effort: emotional stability and the goal. It's two for one. You do not have to know all there is to know about something like weight loss to begin to lose weight. You do not need to lose weight to be able to exercise. Stop lying to yourself. Get up right now and walk around the block. My clients consistently tell me that a no nonsense approach cre- ates the accountability they need to make the effort. I agree. All you need to succeed is a SMART goal. A Specific, Measur- able, Attainable, Realistic, Time defined goal. An example would be: I want to lose 30 pounds in 3 months or less. This goal covers all the ele- ments of a SMART goal. All it takes from here is a plan, action, assessment and evaluation of that assessment. See, it isn't that hard. Once you know what you want, the how it gets here defines itself. You take the actions and your life changes one goal at a time. You can do it, millions of peo- ple are successful you are just as capable as they are. Commit, make a plan, take action and achieve.
