Reid won't dwell on comments about Obama WASHINGTON (AP) — Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid sought to slam the book shut Monday on a controversy stemming from remarks about President Barack Obama's race and dialect, and a string of for- giving statements from promi- nent blacks made clear his lead- ership post is not in immediate jeopardy. ''I've apologized to the pres- ident,'' he said, and to everyone ''within the sound of my voice that I could have used a better choice of words.'' He spoke in Apex, Nev., his first public comments since the issue flared over the weekend. ''I'll continue to do my work for the African-American com- munity ... I'm not going to dwell on this any more,'' he added. While nationally prominent Democrats ranging from Obama to the Rev. Al Sharpton have rallied to his side, the impact of the gaffe in Reid's home state of Nevada is unpre- dictable. The 70-year-old majority leader is seeking re- election this fall, and recent polls show him trailing poten- tial Republican rivals. Republicans have called on Reid to step down as majority leader, a move that would undermine his re-election chances in Nevada, where he is running as a powerful senior lawmaker who can deliver for his home state. Obama mulls adding levies to banks to recoup bailout money WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is weighing a levy on Washing- ton-rescued banks to help recover shortfalls in a $700 bil- lion bailout fund and to help balance a budget that is looking increasingly grim amid an ongoing economic crisis. A senior administration offi- cial said Monday that Obama would seek modifications to the law that sent billions in bailout money in 2008 and 2009 to a flailing Wall Street that was approaching collapse. The gov- ernment official spoke on the condition of anonymity to dis- cuss the president's thinking. The law that created the Troubled Asset Relief Program gives the president until 2014 to seek a way to recoup unrecov- ered money from financial institutions. An industry official said consideration of a levy now would be premature. ''Current law doesn't trigger this tax proposal for another four years,'' said Scott Talbott, chief lobbyist for the Financial Services Roundtable, an indus- try group for some of the largest financial firms. ''We look forward to seeing the details of the complexity of the formula, of who it's applied to and what the assessment is based on and when it is applied,'' he said. Sarah Palin signs on with Fox News ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — Sarah Palin, former Alaska governor and 2008 Republican vice presidential candidate, will return to her broadcast roots and take her conservative message to Fox News as a regular commentator, the cable channel announced Monday. ''I am thrilled to be joining the great talent and manage- ment team at Fox News,'' Palin said in a statement posted on the network's Web site. ''It's wonderful to be part of a place that so values fair and balanced news.'' Fox said that according to the multiyear deal, Palin will offer political commentary and analysis on the cable channel, as well as Fox's Web site, radio network and business cable channel. She also will host occasional episodes of Fox News' ''Real American Stories,'' a series debuting this year that the net- work said will feature true inspirational stories about Americans who have overcome adversity. ''Governor Palin has capti- vated everyone on both sides of the political spectrum and we are excited to add her dynamic voice to the FOX News lineup,'' Bill Shine, executive vice presi- dent of programming, said in a statement. Radical cleric warns terror fight could lead to occupation SAN'A, Yemen (AP) — Yemen's most influential Islamic cleric, considered an al-Qaida- linked terrorist by the United States, warned Monday that the U.S.-backed fight against the ter- ror group could lead to ''foreign occupation'' of the country. Sheik Abdul-Majid al-Zin- dani's comments illustrate the pressure Yemen's government is under to limit the U.S. role here even as Washington ramps up counterterrorism aid and training to help combat al-Qaida's offshoot in the country. Al-Zindani is emblematic of how — unlike in Iraq and Afghanistan, whose governments are bitter enemies of al-Qaida — Yemen's beleaguered regime has built alliances with Islamic extremists to hold onto power. Some have al-Qaida connections, complicating the fight. Branded a spiritual mentor of Osama bin Laden by the U.S., al- Zindani is highly influential among Yemenis. The United States has labeled him a ''global terrorist,'' alleging in a 2004 U.S. Treasury report that he helped fund and recruit for al-Qaida and that students from his Iman Uni- versity were involved in past attacks. Yemen's government has openly allied with al-Zindani in the past and still courts his sup- port. The deputy prime minister last week defended the cleric, say- ing he is not a member of al- Qaida. US warns Asian firms on use of toxic cadmium LOS ANGELES (AP) — The top U.S. consumer product regula- tor is warning Asian manufactur- ers not to substitute other toxic substances for lead in children's items, a message that follows the launch of a government investiga- tion into Chinese-made jewelry that lab tests showed was laden with the heavy metal cadmium. Inez Tenenbaum, chairman of the Consumer Product Safety Commission, said in taped remarks to be delivered Tuesday in Hong Kong that her agency would be strenuously guarding against attempts to swap one health hazard for another, now that lead is barred under U.S. law in children's toys and jewelry. ''I would highly encourage all of you to ensure that toy manufac- turers and children's product man- ufacturers in your country are not substituting cadmium, antimony, barium, in place of lead,'' Tenen- baum tells an audience of chil- dren's products manufacturers, exporters and regulators, accord- ing to a transcript. ''All of us should be committed to keeping hazardous or toxic levels of heavy metals out of ... toys and children's products.'' The speech follows an Associ- ated Press investigative report that documented how some Chinese manufacturers have been substi- tuting cadmium for lead in cheap charm bracelets and pendants being sold throughout the United States. In lab testing for the AP, the most contaminated piece of chil- dren's jewelry contained 91 per- cent cadmium by weight. The cadmium content of other trinkets, all purchased at national and regional chains or franchises, test- ed at 89 percent, 86 percent and 84 percent by weight. Few of the items contained much lead. Archaeologists find prehistoric building in city of Tel Aviv JERUSALEM (AP) — Archaeologists have uncovered remains of an 8,000-year-old pre- historic building as well as ancient flint tools in the modern city of Tel Aviv, Israel's Antiquities Authori- ty announced Monday. The build- ing is the earliest structure ever found in Tel Aviv and changes what archaeologists previously believed about the area in ancient times. ''This discovery is both impor- tant and surprising to researchers of the period,'' said Ayelet Dayan, the archaeologist who led the excavation. ''For the first time we have encountered evidence of a permanent habitation that existed in the Tel Aviv region 8,000 years ago,'' she said. The three-room structure is believed to be have been built in the Neolithic period — when humans went from a nomadic existence of hunting and gathering to living in permanent settlements and engaging in agriculture.
