BETA TIDINGS A PUBLICATION OF BETA SIGMA PSI AT PURDUE UNIVERSITY FALL 2015 Through Adversity, to the Stars Update on the Active Chapter W hen asked how I intended to run my office for the coming semester, the best thought that came to mind was to follow Beta Sigma Psi's motto: Per aspera ad astra. Despite the hardships and mishaps we've faced, I intend to raise our Chapter up by doing whatever it takes for our brothers to excel across the board. ACADEMIC IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM One of the biggest changes we'll be making as we move forward is how we handle academics. Last year, most of our members beat the men's average GPA and several made the Dean's List. In fact, one brother received a 4.0. However, that still leaves plenty of room for improvement. Our scholarship board has been working hard to develop a brand new academic improvement program that will be implemented this coming semester. Some of the highlights of the program include required study hours based on each member's GPA and pairing new members with older brothers in the same or similar major to mentor them on their studies. $1,000 RAISED FOR LOCAL LUTHERAN CHURCH I'm proud to announce that this semester we will hold our Kiddie Pool Kickball philanthropy event, with proceeds donated to Habitat for Humanity. In addition, we've recently started tithing the active Chapter budget and donating the money to our local Lutheran church. This semester, we'll be raising at least $1,000 from tithing alone. Beta Sig enjoyed showing our mothers around campus at our Mom's Day event last spring. Hingst Scholars Program Attracts Men to Beta Sig, Prepares Them for College Life Interview with HSP Participant Cole Postell '15 L ast spring, we announced the Hingst Scholars Program (HSP), a four-week academic program for freshman funded by donations toward our educational fund. The program saw immediate success, with many freshmen completing it, each receiving a $500 scholarship, and pledging Beta Sigma Psi. We spoke with one of those scholarship recipients, Cole Postell '15, to hear about his experience with HSP. Q: What attracted you to Beta Sigma Psi? A: The fact that Beta Sigma Psi is faith based initially grasped my interest, and then I started talking to the brothers in the Chapter. They were all very friendly and interested in me, not what I was wearing. I also saw how close they all were as brothers. Q: How did HSP help you become a better student? A: HSP helped me become a better student by obtaining tips from the brothers about school and gave me the financial ability to buy my books. Q: Did HSP influence you to rush Beta Sigma Psi? A: Going through HSP showed me how close the Beta Sig brothers were and I wanted to be a part of that, so I decided to join Beta Sig. Q: What was your favorite part about going through the HSP? A: My favorite part about going through HSP was seeing how close the brothers were and seeing them interact. Q: What do you want to say to alumni for providing this HSP experience? A: Thank you, alumni, because without your help I would not have had the money to buy my books for the spring semester of 2015. That means a lot to me. Thank you. Cole is a mechanical engineering tech- nology major from Bloomington, Indi- ana. E-mail: cole.postell@yahoo.com Undergraduates helped paint the basement of the University Lutheran Church.
