spot light on literac y at
t he 12th Annual Reading
Rocks! Walk-a-thon on
Sat urday, Oct . 17 at 8:30
a.m. at Fest ival Park in
Dow ntow n Fayet tev ille.
"We hope to have a large
turnout like we have in
previous years," said Jody
Hawley, chairperson of
Reading Rocks. "We need
thousands of walkers
to join us to celebrate
literacy in Cumberland
Count y Schools."
The goal of t he event is
to raise money for schools
to purchase book s and
ot her learning resources for t he st udent s.
" We would like to top last year. Our schools raised more t han
$240,000," said Hawley. Our tot al last year including our in-k ind
donat ions for t he whole dist rict was more t han $257,000."
The walk begins at 9 a.m. and t he route w inds past historic dow ntow n
sites. High school bands are st at ioned along t he route to perform as
walkers pass by. The schools designated as t he most improved and t he
schools raising t he most in donat ions w ill also receive recognit ion. The
high school band t hat raised t he greatest amount of money w ill lead
t he walk w it h Mayor Nat Rober t son and ot her special g uest s. Cost ume
characters are also on site.
"This year t he spirit award has been revamped in order to get schools
more involved while t hey are walk ing and show ing t heir school spirit,"
said Hawley.
A ll donat ions are t a x deduct ible. The count y w ide f und is dist ributed
equit ably among all schools to purchase book s and learning tools t hat
benef it Cumberland Count y st udent s. Schools are allowed to cont inue to
raise money t hrough Dec. 4 in t he name of Reading Rocks!
" We are ver y excited about t he walk t his year," said Hawley. " We k now
t hat t his is t he largest f undraiser for Cumberland Count y Schools and it
is t he largest event t hat get s so much of our communit y involved."
Sponsorship levels are available. T-shir t s are $5 for yout h
and $10 for adult s. Donat ions should be mailed to CCS
