8A Daily News – Saturday, March 10, 2012 Religion Faith&Worship Voices of Faith How have faith practices changed in the U.S.? McClatchy Newspapers HINDUISM ARRIVED IN AMERICA IN 1893 A.M. Bhattacharyya, an active member of the Hindu community: Hindu faith institutions in America have devel- oped under distinctive categories over a period of more than a century. In 1893 Swami Vivekananda brought the mes- sage of Vedanta in America. His open-minded world views of all religions as different paths to God attracted many Americans. He founded Vedanta Society in America in 1894 to propagate Vedanta philosophy. Vedanta centers are run by ordained monks of Ramakr- ishna Order of India. Later on, other pre-eminent teachers came to America with their spiritual messages. Swami Yogananda, founder of Self-Realization Fellowship, focused on teaching the technique of Kriya-Yoga. Mahar- ishi Mahesh Yogi's focus was on teaching transcendental meditation technique. Maharishi University of Management in Iowa teaches this ancient technique with modern subjects of study. Swami Prabhupada, founder of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness, brought the concept of developing a devotional relationship to God through chanting God's name. Krishna is the supreme godhead. Spiritual talks and temple worships are also a part of spiritual quest. Many ISKCON temples were built across the nation. Ritualistic deity worship in temples gained momentum in the latter half of 20th century with the support of Hindu immigrants. American Hindus are keen on maintaining their religious identities and traditions. Many temples across America were built during this period. Worship practices, generally done by priests trained in India, are more diverse to cope with the diverse traditions of Hindu community members. ISLAM REMAINS THE SAME, BUT ITS NUMBERS GROW Syed E. Hasan, Midland Islamic Council: The essential requirements of the practice of Islam comprising the five pillars _ declaration of faith, five daily prayers, charity, fast- ing, and pilgrimage to Mecca _ were set forth in the Qur'an and elaborated upon by Prophet Muhammad. These practices, which transcend time and space, have remained unchanged since the advent of Islam. A Muslim today, anywhere in the world, follows the same Qur'an, where the divine words, revealed about 1,400 years ago, are exactly the same in a version printed in the 21st century as in the original Arabic text produced in the 7th. However, if one looks at Islam as a faith and its presence in the United States, there are huge changes that have occurred during the past 50 years: The number of followers is on the increase; Islam as a faith is known to more Amer- icans today than before; mosques are found in practically every city and major towns. Muslims are a valuable and visible segment of American society, such as congressmen, eminent scientists, engineers, and several well-known sports personalities; the designer of the Sears Tower (Fazlur Rahman Khan), and a Nobel laure- ate in chemistry (Ahmed Zewail, 1999), are all Muslims. While Islam has found its rightful place in the rainbow of religious diversity in the United States, it faces some chal- lenges emanating from biased groups who misuse the media to target the uninformed and simple-minded folks to misrepresent Islam. It is this practice of wrongful portrayal of Islam that needs to change. Jehovah Rapha ministry to cancer patients No one wants to hear a diagnosis of cancer. Just the word itself brings all kinds of thoughts, emotions, and a feeling of one's life being out of con- trol. When I was diagnosed with uter- ine cancer in January of 2009, the peace of God immediately engulfed me. It was a "great surprise package" from God. I think, in His mercy, God met my need for strength, especially having heard such unwelcome news. I'd not be honest though if I neglected to confess that some tur- moil also engulfed my mind in the night hours that followed. However, the Holy Spirit of God reminded me of many promises in the Bible that I had read and memorized since 1963. One such promise was what Jesus said, "I will never leave or forsake you"(see Hebrews 13:5). So, who wouldn't be okay when in the pres- ence of Almighty God. Each new day brought its own struggles, but each new day was a gift from God, and has continued to be so. Some special blessings that have given me great strength have been friends who care and the bond of love from family members. My home church has been and remained a refuge and a tower of blessing too. There are so many cancer patients today. People have their own "jour- ney" in standing against cancer. I feel that people need support and special encouragement when fighting off cancer. I use that wording because it is so vital that anyone with cancer must make a decision to live, and not to give up on recovery. We need hope, laughter, beautiful music, healthy foods, rest, positive friendships, and those who believe in our recovery, surrounding us. We cer- tainly do not need to hear tales of how St. Peter's Episcopal Church, corner of Jeffer- son and Elm streets, is hosting Taize Prayer each Sunday evening during the Lent season, from 7-8 p.m. All are welcome to join in this spiritually uplifting hour of prayer. Ecumenical and wel- coming to all, Taize Prayer places all believ- ers in a sense of commu- nion together, praying on behalf of others and the world. There are three parts to this hour of prayer. First is chanting med- someone else had our same type of cancer and died. I have learned to say, "If this doesn't have a happy ending then keep it to yourself please." Con- stant questions, from kind people, even become diffi- cult at times. I have a friend who answers, "working on good." When friends ask how I'm doing, I often answer, "I'm doing." That usually brings a smile or a chuck- le. I know that Jesus has healed me of cancer, and I know that some people still doubt that fact, but we must decide, deep within our own heart, that we are choosing to believe God's Word over man's word. We need to give God the glory for our healing, for if God does not bless surgery, chemo or radiation, our bod- ies will not heal. I'm thankful for good doctors and excellent medical facilities that are still available to us. Jehovah Rapha is the Hebrew Patricia Martin GodTalk February 2nd beginning at 6 p.m. Come to the Sweet Life Cafe at New Life Assembly in Corning, 660 Solano St. (next door to Sav More Mar- ket). There will always be a tasty dinner (healthy food), a guest speaker, great music, times of sharing and prayer for those who desire it, resources of helpful materi- als, creative helps for main- taining hope, healing scrip- tures and more. Friendships will develop over a period of time and positive network- ing opportunities. This ministry outreach is for all people, of all faiths, who have cancer or are can- wording for God who heals. Jehovah Rapha Ministry to Cancer patients was birthed within my heart because there exists a great need for a Christ- ian ministry that brings hope and encouragement. Almost everyone knows someone with cancer, or a can- cer survivor. As mentioned, healing comes from the Lord, but He often heals through the prayers of God's people. We Christians are God's hands extended to a hurting world. Jehovah Rapha Ministry to Cancer Patients will be meeting the first Thursday of each month. Our first dinner meeting will be Thursday, itations described in the words of Carolyn Myss, author of Entering the Castle: "The words awaken the soul with a kind of sacred music and allow it to enter a deeper truth." The experience of singing these phrases nourishes participants on a deep non-verbal level. Second, a passage from scripture is read fol- lowed by a time of reflec- tion and silence, allowing the words to enter one's heart and mind. Third, petitions are cer survivors. You may bring your spouse; care provider or a friend too. Dinner is $6 per person and we need you to RSVP at least one week before each meeting. Please call by Jan. 25 for our first meeting. Parking is available on the church grounds. Questions are welcome so feel free to call. Leave a message if needed and we will return your call. Pastors, please also feel free to call Pastor J.R. Gonzales if you need more information. New Life Assembly's number is 530-824-3426. Interested people may also call Patricia Martin at 530-824-0411 or Carole Clark at 530-824-1810. Come and be blessed. Patricia Martin is the founder of God's Precious Jewels, a ministry to Native American children on reservations all over the Western United States. She is based in Red Bluff and found her healing from cancer where she lives with her God. Taize worship defined offered for others who are in danger, in ill health, in financial diffi- culties, bound by addic- tions or suffer abuse, and any kind of trouble or distress, as well as prayers for the communi- ty of Red Bluff, the nation and the world. Everyone is invited to come to the cross for a moment to pray, to bring our burdens and the bur- dens of our world, and all that is in our hearts to Jesus Christ. The sequence is meditative and heartfelt, a drawing Tehama County Church Directory HOYT-COLE CHAPEL OF THE FLOWERS 816 Walnut St. - Red Bluff Red Bluff....
