Setting it straight There were errors in the guest view Medal of Honor by John Minton that ran on the Opinion page, 4A, in the March 3-4 weekend edition. The name of the recipient should have been France Silva and he was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions on June 1, 1900, while fighting the Boxers and Chinese Army on the "Tarter Wall," the barrier between the enemy and the eight legations. The Daily News regrets the errors. –––––––– It is the policy of the Daily News to correct as quickly as possible all errors in fact that have been published in the newspaper. If you feel a factual error has been made in a news story, call the news department at 527-2153. V-E Day to be observed Tuesday The title of this column may be confusing to readers and perhaps even to columnists of our locality. This past week was a time of sort- ing and sifting many objects that have been stored away by friends and relatives. As we looked at the number of paper filled boxes it was discovered that many Red Bluffians had saved newspapers by the dozens. One such Red Bluff Daily News paper was 17 inches wide and 22 inches long. Six pages were to make the paper complete, however it seems that page number 5 had not been saved. The notable headline carried two words which are very large letters which were four inches by two inches in size. The title: "NAZIS QUIT," the words took up an area of 16 inches by 6 inches of the top of the paper. The next words were: Red Bluff Daily News The Gate- way to Lassen Volcanic National Park., Red Bluff, Tehama County, California Monday, May 7 1945. Published by the Shasta-Cascade Wonderland. Volume 62 –No. 158, Established 1885. The Weather; Sacramento Val- ley—Clear today. tonight and Tues- day. Slightly warmer Tuesday. Maximum temperature Saturday, 82; minimum Sunday, 52; maxi- mum Sunday, 86; minimum this morning, 54. After the Newspaper official head- ing the following Large messages were: "Germans Announce Surren- der" V- Day to Be Observed Tuesday. The 1945 daily news had 236 words at the beginning of the paper so one can imagine that the next 5- 6 pages would have been loaded with hundreds of words with infor- mation regarding the announcing of the end of the war in 1945. For those of us who were still children at the time of the ending of the war with Germany it meant that some of our fathers would come home from war and settle in Red Bluff, Califor- nia. It was 1946 before our immedi- ate family came to Red Bluff. Our father came out of the military in 1945 and by the following year we were living in the then Veterans Housing locat- ed at the head of Lincoln Street in 1946. Yes, I must admit that the 1945 Red Bluff Daily News brought nostalgia of many days gone by. The days when the Tremont Hotel still stood on Main Street. There was a great need for the hotel in those days. " Wanted—Dishwasher, good wages. "Dr. Eastman Plans Early Retirement" Dr. R. s. Eastman, who has served as pastor of the Red Bluff Presbyterian church since June 1926, is planning to resign, effective July 1. At the morning ser- vice yesterday he announced that a congregational meeting has been called by the church session for May 20. Then the congregation will submit the resignation to the Sacra- mento Presbytery, which will dis- solve the pastoral relationship between Dr. Eastman and the Red Bluff Church.
