3 Lambda Chi Alpha T h e C a m p a i g n f o r A l p h a - D e l t a Z e t a A s the summer comes to a close, the Chapter looks forward to building a foundation for our new members. Looking to improve GPA and find new philanthropy ideas, Lambda Chi Alpha at MS&T is geared for another exciting semester. Two Fall Philanthropy Events Planned High Theta Rob Carmody '15 planned a fantasy football event with proceeds benefitting the canned food drive for Feeding America. Alpha-Delta was awarded a $1,000 grant from Lambda Chi Alpha's Fund My Zeta program, which will be used to make our 55th annual Chicken Benefit Dinner the best yet! New Recruitment Process Finds Great Group of Men Alpha-Delta is ready to welcome 19 new members to our brotherhood this fall. High Delta Matt Dorsey '17 has worked to continuously improve our selection process for new brothers, and with the use of a revamped scholarship application, interview process, and personalized mail messages, we believe this to be the best group of men to join Lambda Chi Alpha this year. Move-in day was August 15, and we encourage everyone to come say hello. GPA Increases, Chapter Ranked 4th As our new members begin their journey into our brotherhood, the Chapter intends to guide these associates to the same academic success that our Chapter has seen over the last three semesters. Our Chapter GPA increased from 3.141 to a 3.175 in spring 2015, ranking us fourth among all Greek organizations and above the all-female, all-male, all-sorority, all-fraternity, all-Greek, and all-student GPAs. Ryan Kniepmann '16, newly elected High Sigma, has already begun a new system for checking our files and assisted studying among brothers. Academics will always remain our focus of this organization. In addition to Brother Kniepmann, Ryan Cunningham '17 and Jonathan Perry '18 will take over as the new alumni correspondent and business representative, respectively. As brothers return from co-op this semester, still others will leave, which will vacate other High Zeta offices. With these changes, Alpha-Delta expects to see constructive change as the year progresses. It is our intention as a Chapter to continue this success into the campaign for a new house while also building on our brotherhood to endure for years to come. In ZAX, Scott Marchetti '17 High Alpha sgm2pc@mst.edu (618) 218-4035 What Is a Significant Gift for a Worthwhile Cause? T he definition of a significant gift probably varies from one person to the next. I believe it is a combination of one's capacity to give coupled with one's motivation to give. There are a lot of ADZ brothers who have likely made a significant gift based on this definition. At the same time, I expect there are others who, for one reason or another, have not done so. In my own case, I have made a significant gift to the ADZ capital campaign foundation, as well as to a number of other worthwhile causes over the years. The size of those gifts often varied based on the amount of need, my own personal commitment, and the support from my spouse. There are several ways to make tax-deductible donations; taxpayers who have large gains in appreciated stock can avoid paying capital gains and deduct the full market value of the gift, within certain limits. Alumni 70-and-a-half years old or older may transfer up to $100,000 from an IRA Required Minimum Withdrawal without having to report the withdrawal as income on their tax return. Each of us remembers how we became a Lambda Chi, the brothers we first met, and the house we chose to live in. ADZ was the defining transformation of my college experience more than 54 years ago. My ADZ experience helped me grow in leadership ability and social development. It helped me learn how to compromise with others who might have different positions on any given issue. It took me five long years and a summer to graduate; I credit my Fraternity for keeping me in school until I graduated. I had many bad days on campus but never had a bad day at the Chapter House. I still remember all the good times, including when I met my wife at a Valentine's party at the house in 1964. During all the years that I lived in the Chapter House, as well as my involvement in ADZ activities as an alumnus, I made many good friends whom I have kept up with. Several of them have become regular golfing partners. It is not unusual to relive shared experiences of our ADZ affiliation whenever we get together. Mary, my wife of 48 years, is a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority. I am fortunate that she understands and supports my commitment to Lambda Chi and ADZ at Rolla. "Len and I support a number of organizations," Mary stated. "We are well aware of how much the generosity of others, particularly those who came before us, have benefitted our lives. We are grateful, and we feel it is both a privilege and an obligation to give back or pay it forward as a way of saying thank you." We have reached a critical point in the capital campaign where we must receive additional funding and support in order for our project to move forward as planned. The current challenge gift of $450,000 provides a major incentive for each of us to increase our present commitment or to make that financial commitment that may have been put off. Your additional pledge or new pledge will be matched dollar for dollar to give twice the impact it otherwise would have. Please consider what ΛXA has meant to you not only while you were in college but how it might have contributed to your successful career. The Alpha-Delta Zeta project is an opportunity to ensure that many other young men will be able to have a positive ΛXA experience. Send in your additional or new pledge before December 31 for a double financial impact.
