(562) 728-7806 cfreeman@berkeley.edu T ake absurdly high risks. Live out your most wildly fulfilling dreams. Choose a career that you're passionate about. These are just a few of the life tips that Justin Arbuckle '95 encourages undergraduates and alumni to utilize when pursuing opportunities within the professional world. As co-founder of the world- renowned Anthem Winery in Napa Valley, California, Justin understands the value of hard work and dedication that is required to create and maintain a successful business. He isn't the only one, however, who has the luxury of running an immensely popular winery business. His wife, Julie, serves as the CEO of Anthem Winery, and she cherishes what the winery has to offer. "Running a winery is challenging on a daily basis as there is always something new to learn or adapt to. The grape growing and wine industries in Napa are the best of the best, but it is also a fairly small community, so I have really enjoyed overseeing our entry into it. I really enjoy getting to know our customers who are from all over the country and have diverse backgrounds and careers, but share a true appreciation for our wines," she says. Shortly after graduating, Justin and Julie decided to pursue their mutual interest of wine and took a weekend trip to Napa Valley and ended up falling in love with the area. "We had an incredible time touring wineries and vineyards, winetasting, and enjoying all aspects of the wine country lifestyle. At first, we just wanted to spend more time in Napa, but once we began meeting other vintners and thinking about raising a family, we started dreaming about doing that in Napa while growing our own grapes and producing our own wine," he says. When asked what their favorite wines are with Anthem Winery, Justin says, "Our 2010 Mt. Veeder Estate Merlot, Julie's favorite, and our 2011 Mt. Veeder Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, my favorite, are the ones that stand out. The Merlot's aromatics are dominated by plums, black berries, charcoal, and dark chocolate. The Cabernet is a big brooding mountain wine with exquisite structure and depth. The nose is complex with sage, mint, gunpowder, blackberries, and black cherries. Highly recommended!" Aside from the winery's popularity among customers, Justin credits much of his success with the winery to the critical life skills that he learned during his time in Alpha Beta at UC Berkeley. "Sigma Chi provided me with everything from brotherhood to unforgettable social experiences to management and leadership opportunities, and most importantly the chance to develop some of the most valuable relationships in my life." The leadership positions that Justin was elected to in Alpha Beta "provided a crash course on goal setting, prioritization, communication, motivating others, and networking. Because of them, I think I left Alpha Beta more developed in these areas which jumpstarted my transition into the professional world," he says. When Justin is not hard at work with the winery, he and his wife, Julie, enjoy spending time with their three children: Josie (9), J.J. (8), and Jordan (5). They love playing whiffle ball with Jordan, swimming, spending family time in Napa, and taking walks around the vineyard. "In hoc signo vinces." You can contact Justin at jarbuckle@sbcglobal.net.
