THE CAL SIG ALPHA BETA CHAPTER OF SIGMA CHI FRATERNITY Fall 2015 G reetings from the Alpha Beta Chapter of the Sigma Chi Fraternity. Fall semester is upon us in Berkeley. Our summer Sigma Chi residents reluctantly packed their golf clubs away, said goodbye to Tilden park, and prepared to chant "Roll on You Bears" with the rest of the student section at Memorial Stadium. There is much talk and excitement about our Golden Bear football team, and with a home schedule featuring some great conference match-ups, the corner of College and Channing will be the place to be on game days! A record has been set for live-in occupancy this semester, as the house swells to 42 residents among the 19 bedrooms at Alpha Beta. To accommodate 42 residents, the House Corporation purchased nine additional sets of bunk beds that have been professionally installed in each of the rooms requiring more capacity. Summer renovation projects also included refurbishing five bedrooms on the second floor, repairing and re-roofing the entry overhang, and bathroom renovations. Our next big project will involve replacing and re-roofing the three large roof surfaces on the house, since they are all in need of replacement. We are budgeting for this now and hope to have this accomplished during the school year. Alpha Beta has been approved for a grant that would help pay for solar panels to be installed on one of the roof surfaces to offset some of the house's electrical bill. Once the roof is replaced, progress on the solar panel installation will begin. Sigma Chi would be the first fraternity at UC Berkeley to install solar panels. Our brothers are quite excited by the long-term power savings the solar technology will provide, as well as the prestige of being the first house at UC Berkeley to adopt this green technology. I hope that you can stop by the house before or after one of the football games, see the work we have done, and get a chance to meet some of the fantastic brothers living in the house. We will be hosting our premier alumni event, the Big Game Lunch, at Sinbad's on Friday, November 20. Steven Rocha '78, Ed Glover '79, Charles Wingard '80, and Vince Rocha '79 have done an excellent job organizing this event, and we highly encourage alumni to join in on the festivities that evening and reconnect with Alpha Beta brothers!
