ByHeatherHoelscher hhoelscher@redbluffdailynews.com @DN_Heather on Twitter REDBLUFF TheSpartansvolley- ball team took the win against the Anderson Cubs in five sets Wednesday at Red Bluff High School. "It was a bit of a roller coaster but overall I think the girls came together well as a team," head coach Kelli Mus- taine said. "They were able to pick each other up. All I had to do is let them talk to each other in a huddle and then they were back to normal. It was a really good realization of how strong they are as a team, emotionally together and physically. They played awesome." In the first set Christina Zum- alt blocked a hard hit from the Cubs and the Spartans took the set with a score of 25-14. The second game was domi- nated by the Cubs, who kept the lead most of the game. The Cubs took the second set 25-18. The match was Katie Galla- gher's first match back since she tore her ACL in basketball last year. "She did incredible, didn't miss a beat," Mustaine said. "I loved it. She's a great player." Defensively, Logan Wheeler had an amazing game, Mustaine said. Ashlee Tignore and Mack- enzie Colgate both had good de- fensive games. "Block-wise, our middles are on it," Mustaine said. "They have improved so much but there's still a lot to do. Christina Zum- alt and Aurora Carnes were big defensive blockers tonight." The third set was neck and neck as the two teams traded the lead throughout. The Cubs took the lead in the last few shots to win it, 25-20. Tignore and Gallagher set the ball up twice, in the fourth game, for Kennedy Somavia and Zumalt who had back-to- back spikes. The Spartans led the entire fourth game, even- tually winning with a score of 25-13. Somavia hit well and had a couple of assists in the fourth set. "Her hits on that last game really pulled us through," Mus- taine said. Kylee Kitchell hit a couple of line shots in the last set, that re- ally was a turning point, Mus- taine said. In the fifth set the Cubs had the lead early on but the Spar- tans took the win and the match with a score of 15-10. "Overall, I think they did well," Mustaine said." Losing the second two, it put a damper on it but they pulled themselves out. I think that is the strongest point of tonight." The first tournament for the Spartans is Saturday at Oak Ridge in El Dorado Hills. By Janie McCauley The Associated Press SANTA CLARA Months ago in minicamp, Colin Kaepernick expressed the need for him to carry a larger load given the departure of so many stars during the offseason from a de- fensive unit that has long led the San Francisco 49ers. With the season opener quickly approaching, there's clearly a lot riding on Kaepe- rnick's big right arm, perhaps a new-and-improved arm as he and everybody surround- ing the team hope. Kaepernick begins his third full year as starter after spend- ing much of his offseason in Arizona working alongside Kurt Warner and receiving guidance from other quarter- back gurus, and now he will be under the lights for the opener Monday night against Minne- sota eager to prove the extra work made a difference and will lead to better production by an offense that struggled in most phases last year. "I've improved personally, I think this team's improved," Kaepernick said Thursday. "We're a lot farther along than where we started.
