3 GAMMA PSI OF BETA THETA PI The Power of Lifelong Brotherhood Bob Cantrell '62 Remembers His Gamma Psi Roots T he men of Gamma Psi had another fantastic semester in the spring. We added 10 new brothers this past semester, capping off our best recruitment year since the chapter's rechartering, with 36 new brothers added in 2014-15. We are eager to see where our chapter will go this year with our increased membership. The Betas were placed at the top for fraternity grades in the fall semester, and we are expecting a similar result for the spring semester. Former Vice President of Brotherhood Andrew Brown '16 gained the opportunity to intern at a vineyard in California, where he will be until the spring 2016 semester, so the men elected long-time Intramural Sports Chairman Adam Barker '16 to replace him for the final semester of this executive board's term. Last semester was a great time for Beta athletics as well. The Betas finished as one of the top teams in indoor soccer and made a final four run in IFC basketball. Searching for a permanent home has continued to be the long- term goal for the chapter, along with upholding the ideals of the Men of Principle and continuing to distinguish ourselves academically, socially, and in the community. The Gamma Psi Chapter is looking forward to the great events we have planned for the fall semester, as well as continuing our recruiting success to build on what our founding fathers envisioned five years ago. Go green, go white, go Beta. B rotherhood is not only for four years, it is for life. This rings true for Bob Cantrell '62, as being a member of Gamma Psi provided him with incredible, life-changing experiences that he has carried with him throughout life. "My involvement with Beta Theta Pi added tremendously to the four years I was in college, and it was the highlight of my undergraduate experience." These unforgettable experiences have made Bob permanently invested in Gamma Psi, and he has given back to Beta Theta Pi to help secure a future for the chapter for years to come. Being part of such a remarkable brotherhood helped Bob to develop in the academic, social, and personal aspects of his life, and prepared him immensely for the professional world after graduating. During his time in Gamma Psi, Bob forged several powerful connections with brothers, many of which he has maintained to this day, and expanded his leadership experience in the chapter serving as the treasurer and chapter president for Beta Theta Pi. It is his hope that with the success of the campaign, current and future members will continue to be provided these same opportunities to become well-rounded and educated leaders for both the chapter and the Michigan State community as well. One of Bob's most cherished memories as chapter president for Gamma Psi was attending the General Convention for Beta Theta Pi, which was held in Pasadena, California, and having the privilege of representing the chapter in a positive light. Bob then took his leadership experience to another level and was elected the senior class president of the university. "I could not have been more thankful for my brothers' support being elected to such a prestigious position at a large university. Without being in Beta Theta Pi and having their support, I would not have been elected as senior class president of the university." After graduating, Bob served two years as an infantry officer with the United States Army. Upon completion of active duty, he had a fulfilling career in sales and marketing for IBM. He is retired, and does consulting work in the entertainment industry. As an alumnus, Bob stays connected with Gamma Psi brothers from the '60s by reconnecting each year in various parts of the country for their annual alumni gatherings and festivities. He is working diligently on an MSU football documentary, to be titled "Legacy," and is excited to share his work with his Gamma Psi brothers and the MSU community. He enjoys spending time with his five children and four grandchildren. One of his sons, Thomas Cantrell '91, is also a member of Gamma Psi at Michigan State University.
